[Week 1]"New NHL uniforms ready to wear"
V-9, I-37, P-6
This particular article discusses another of Reebok's innovations in the world of professional hockey. As mentioned by a previous user - the article specifically outlines the new "Edge" uniform system and the benefit these jerseys and pants will provide for the NHL players.
Along with promising better protection and improved moisture-management, Reebok also claims the uniforms will mean less fatigue for the players.
The article also mentions that about half of the teams in the NHL have already practiced in the new jerseys, whereas the entire league will be in the uniforms for next season.
The overall look of the uniform is excellent, as it not only claims better protection and moisture-management, but also creats a tighter jersey which will likely cut down on the grabbing from less-skilled, defensive players. It seems as though Reebok has taken the stance to try and create a football-type jersey for use in the NHL. Great move for a great company. To this point, Reebok has basically kept all of the former equipment they've purchased (from KOHO, CCM and Jofa) and simply put the "RBK" logo on it as their own. This is a great move for Reebok, as they are not trying to fix great products by changing everything about them (take notice, Nike).
This is the first major innovation the RBK company has introduced to the NHL, and I believe they have chosen a great avenue for this leap. Whether you're a hockey fan or not, you will certainly take notice to the uniforms above all else.

"It's Foolish to Underestimate MLS's Potential for Success"
V-10, I-18, pg 29
This article discusses the current and the possible future successs of the MLS. I agree with what this article has to say. Although the MLS does not compare to the big three leagues in the U.S. it certainly does have a solid fan base, and has survived despite not having the same marketing resources that the other major sport leagues have. I think that the biggest problem people have with the MLS is that they think that if a league isn't in the same revenue stream as the NFL or MLB that that league is a failure. However, I believe that that is an unfair assessment.
For starters, the big three sports have been around long enough that the eldest generations in America grew up with these leagues, while the MLS is in only it's 12th season. The NFL and MLB were hardly the major, cash cow, leagues in their early years, as they are today. Yet people seem to believe that these leagues were always greatly successful.
Another reason it is premature to discredit the MLS is the potential it still has in the U.S. to expand. Between international stars coming to play for its teams, and the exposer soccer will garner through ESPN in the next 8 years with the World Cup, there is alot to look forward to for the MLS. The big three have reached a point where to expand there business and revenue they must go outside the U.S., but the MLS still has a lot of untapped revenue streams here at home.
Maybe soccer will never be as big as football in the U.S., but I do believe that it will always have a place in America.

"Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl" vol. 10 iss.19 pg.7
The article I chose talked about the recent decision to tear down the Orange Bowl in Miami. It is the home of the Miami Hurricanes football team and FIU football. The Orange Bowl has also hosted 5 Super Bowls. The University of Miami has decided to move their games to the newly remodeled Dolphin stadium.
I agree with the decision to tear down the stadium due to its old, outdated structure. However I do not agree with the idea being thrown around that the city of Miami wants to build a new stadium for the Florida Marlins in place of the demolished Orange Bowl. Miami football has fallen off the past couple years and I think a new stadium and practice facility would be a great recruiting tool that could help Miami return to the spotlight in college football.
I feel a program with the success and history that Miami carries must have a facility of their own to distinguish their program as one of the nations elite. I don't think the Marlins are a big draw in South Florida even if they would build a new stadium.

"miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl" v.10 issue 19, pg 7
The city of Miami after this years football season have the decision to tear down the historic Orange bowl stadium, which has had 5 superbowls played in it. The university of Miami will be moving into dolphins stadium and share the stadium with the miami dolphins.
By tearing down the historic Orange bowl stadium your tearing down alot of memories, and i dont think its worth it. The city is considering building the marlins new stadium where the orange bowl currently is, which i feel is a great idea because the stadium they play in now, which is dolphins stadium, is definately not a baseball stadium. But the orange bowl will be missed but hopefully not forgotten.

"NFL Network will add 2 new shows to evening lineup" Volume 10, Iss. 18, Pg. 10
This article discusses on how NFL Network plans to expand its network by adding two different and interesting shows. They will be "College Football Now" and "Put Up Your Dukes." The two shows will be 30 minutes long and will be aired in the 6-7 p.m. ET time slot.
I believe this is a positive move for the NFL Network, because it is growing and becoming very popular with football fans. It is football 24-7 and fans enjoy how the network focuses on the aspects like inside the locker room, practices, interviews, etc. By adding college football to this program it will make the shower even more interesting, because most people who are NFL fans are normally college football fans too. By having these two new shows right before the popular "NFL Total Access" it will give them publicity and should make them very popular among viewers. This great move by NFL Network will affect the industry because many football fans will only want to watch football. Therefore, this will draw more people from watching ESPN to the NFL Network, because they are focusing on only one sport. Football.

“Crocs’ team deals target NFL fans” vol. 10 issue 19 pg. 3
The article I chose to write about was called “Crocs’ team deals target NFL fans.” A popular brand called Crocs is becoming more and more popular today. Today all brands want to spread their brand’s name in order to gain attention. Some big names such as Nike, Adidas, Reebok, and Under Armor are paying millions to have their name brand shown on the NFL fields. The brand Crocs pays a much lesser amount in order to help make their name the shoe choice for NFL fans. Crocs has signed almost a dozen sponsorship deals and is still now in the process of finalizing them. Some of the names include Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers, and the Oakland Raiders. The Crocs manager Tim Gray felt that using team deals would be a more effective way to reach the fans and to let them know what is going on and what they are doing. Team controlled media, radio scoreboard vignettes, venue signage and game programs are some of the many deals that the NFL has signed up for. The Crocs brand has also made their way into the collegiate industry. They have over 100 schools lined up along with 24 sponsorships. I think this is a great idea for the Crocs brand because they need to gain the media attention because they are not a well-known name such as Nike or Adidas. I think by using the sports to help give them attention will be very beneficial in the end especially by using the NFL. Everyone watches the NFL, therefore everyone will at least hear or see something that deals with this brand. Along with this I think it’s a great idea for the Crocs to get into the collegiate programs also and spread their name there. Just as said before everyone watches the NFL but along with this everyone also watches college football so therefore I feel this will truly benefit this brand and help spread and hopefully give them more success.

[Week 1]“Would Rozelle recognize today’s NFL?” V-10, I-19, P-38
I have to agree with this article. The NFL is all about rules and regulations. I thought it was ludicrous when they started to penalize players for doing endzone dances. Some of them could be over the top, but I think most fans enjoyed them. The reason that the NFL became such a success was because it was about entertainment. It has now become more interested in the growth of its revenue than promoting fan excitement.
The NFL is an enormous business that has a huge fanbase. It would take something extremely drastic to change the minds of the viewers. The reason they are able to treat their business as conservatively as other corporations across America is because many fans do not express their opinion about how they wish the game was more fun to watch. You do hear the players complain about it though. The players should be having fun playing the game and making the fans cheer. They shouldn’t have to worry about being fined for doing an entertaining endzone dance or doing something out of the ordinary to get their fans into the game.

"Volume of Lacrosse Plyaers Outstripping NCAA's capacity" V-10 I-19 pg39
This article discusses lacrosse and how it has become the fastest growing NCAA sport over the past 5 years. There are several big lacrosse advocates that are pushing for NCAA to find a way to increase the number of Universities that offer lacrosse as a sport, not just a club. Men's lacrosse is struggling as a NCAA sport because of title IX, but at this past years NCAA Championships, there were 146,000 spectators. Popularity is not the problem it is funding and title IX.
I do not know a lot about lacrosse because I went to a high school that gradated 100 people.
As an intern with a high school athletic director, I have attended Conference meetings and lacrosse is never mentioned, because it's not a big thing in western PA.
After reading this article, it seems like the next big thing in sports and in my opinion may end up more popular than soccer will in the US. There are so many high school athlete's that play lacrosse and many clubs that are starting up, so hopefully NCAA recognizes the potential of this sport and more universities will sanction it as a sport.

The Saints want to move ahead in the most positive way. That means if they have to hire someone new then thats just what they will do. The Saints hired head coach Sean Payton and for some very important reasons. Sean Payton spent nine years in the NFL as an assistant coach. during that time he has come up with his own game plan for the Saints.
He wanted everything a certain way which I think is very important. Payton had his plan written down in specific terms, so when the painters were done painting their conference room Sean sent them back in to redo it because its not what he wanted. this artical goes on to talk about more things that Payton plans on doing with the attitudes of the player, how well there meetings go, how they carry them selves through practice and as a team.
I think that Payton has a plan and that he should follow it it sounds that he wants what is best for his team, and thats what every coach should strive for. I also liked the part in the article wher it talked about how the owners were willing to break the traditional way of coaching to start a new football era.

"ESPN spots introduce U.S. women's soccer 2.0"
V-10,I-19,p12
The article I choose to read was about how they are going to advertise for the womens World Cup in China on September 10. ESPN is trying to get many people to tune into the World Cup and support the womens team. they are going to try and focus on three ladies on the U.S.A. team. They are Kristine Lilly, Hope Solo and Abby Wambach. ESPN is saying that it might be hard to get threw the peoples eyes that the womens team is just as good as the 1999 team.
They want to have all the advertising start now to get peoples attention and hopefully get many fans to cheer one the womens team. Way's they plan on advertising is having commercials on the ESPN,printed ads in the magazines of ESPN and online as a banner across the ESPN website.
I think this is a good idea of trying to advertise on every possible spot. You know that there are many of people who get on ESPN everyday and would have to read it when it comes across the screen. Same with the other two ways of advertising. I also think maybe if soccer coaches see these advertisements then maybe he would get their teams to watch the womens soccer team play in China.

"Flyers, Sixers, will give fans a crack at all- you- can- eat seats" V-10, pg14
This article is talking about the all you can eat seats that are going to be provided at the Wachovia center for 5 pro teams. They are providing 352 all you can eat seats in the package deal with the ticket. These seats will be located in the northeast corner of the buildings 4th floor. These tickets are for single games and not season tickets. This is a marketing campaign and the cost of the ticket will vary pending on what game and what team is playing. I feel this is a good idea because with this price for the ticket people will come and fill teh stadium. It will start to be more of a demand for the seats and then thats when they can inflate teh price and make the most money possible. This is a very smart marketing idea and i feel they will be successful.

[Week 1]Fox Opening Sports Home on MySpace
V-10, I-18, P-1
Fox Interactive Media is adding a sports channel to their MySpace.com website. The agreement with help promote the Scout.com site being used for the sports channel and will also bring in even more visitors to MySpace. Another goal for MySpace is to enhance the users overall experience, as they will be able to upload their own sports videos and media as well.
I think this is a great idea for both sides, as over fifty percent of Scout.com’s users frequent MySpace to begin with. The other fifty percent of Scout.com’s user who have never visited MySpace are now going to be exposed to that, bringing in more users. Scout.com’s traffic will increase greatly from visits from MySpace’s 116 million users, which will bring in a lot more money from advertisers. It is a win-win situation. Both sides traffic will increase. Scout.com’s paid insider information will gain a lot more exposure and participants as well, and the free access of MySpace.com is just another bonus. All in all, each site is basically promoting each other, and helping expose each other even more so.

Zach Brink..... "Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl" Issue 18, Volume 10, Page 29
In this article the city of Miami decided to tear down the Orange Bowl and look for new options. One was mentioned about The Florida Marlins and a New Stadium.
The Orange Bowl is such a historic place and i dont really think it should be torn down. If anything i think it should be remolded.
Then Miami and FIU could split the cost and playing on it and also leave it a option for Bowl Games since it can hold up to like 73,000 people.
Even though im not a fan of Miami sports team i dont really agree also with college teams playing on NFL teams fields and having them tear up the field just like we have that problem in Pittsburgh with High School,College and then its garbage by the time Steeler Game rolls around.
So i dont agree with just tearing it down for no reason and just demolishing such a historic place such as the Orange Bowl

“Flyers, Sixers will give fans a crack at all-you-can-eat seats” I 18
This article is about a new marketing strategy that the department is starting to increase ticket sales for events at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. The new strategy isn’t so new however, many teams have experimented with the idea of all-you-can-eat seats. The plan entails taking the mezzanine section and selling those tickets at a higher cost to include all you can concessions for the event. This marketing strategy is already being used in baseball, hockey, the NBA and various other sports. Each fan will receive a wristband along with the tickets good for the all you can eat privilege only at the designated stands. This new marketing strategy will be promoted through the media and e mails to previous ticket buyers, group ticket buyers and previous season ticket holders.
As far as this strategy goes I think it is a strong idea to sell tickets. The problem arises though with the teams playing in the stadium. If the teams are not doing well I do not think raising ticket prices; although with added incentive, will bring the larger crowds that the managers are hoping for. There maybe a few fans out there who decide to take their kids and watch a game or two and will pay the added price, because it is would be cheaper then buying straight from the concession stands, but I cannot see how this will increase crowd size by any significant portions.

"More NFL Coaches Are Acting Like CEOs' V-10, I-19, pg 1, 45-47
The article talks about the evolution of the Head Coach the job no longer is just about X's and O's. But many put their own stamp on a franchise. But how things are run when they travel to the color of meeting rooms and sponsorship deals for the team. Many owners 10 years ago wouldn't have said that the Head Coach was the most important position because many of them had to report to the General Manager or President of the team but many are given a lot of freedom to make the team how they want it.
I absolutely agree with this article. One of the things I've learned playing football is if you take care of the little things the big things will take care of themselves. I'm sure many of the coaches see it this way as well. As long as the different tasks and jobs they are trying to take care of away from the X's and O's doesn't distract the team I am all for head coaches taking over more responsibilities, than just coaching the team. I feel to be an effective coach and have players really buy into you. You need to have some kind of impact on almost every faucet of the franchise.

Agency close to hiring recruiter who helped sign No.1 draft pick for rival. V-10 pg7
This article was about Mel Bratton a former reccuiter who was basically the reason that No.1 pick Jamarcus Russell signed for LMM. Bratton was a former NFL scout who isn't really a agent but knows how to bring players in. Bratton because he is brought Jamarcus in her has made a name for himself and will be probably rewarded with a job. Working with LMM his primary job will be to recruit big time players and evaluate them also. This article also states that Jamarcus may leave LMM and if Bratton leaves usually when a agent leave the player follows. I don't see how good this guy can be because Jamarcus isn't playing football he's not signed so really how good is his agents. The season starts Sunday holding out may cause Jamarcus to lose lots of endorsment deals. If your not playing there's no way to make money

"Ruling May Help Vick Keep Bonuses"
Volume 10 Issue 18
For my first journal entry I will discuss an article in the sports business journal that deals with Michael Vick and the charges he is being faced with. Considering the fact that he accepted the guilty plea all eyes and ears turned to the question, what about all of his money? In this article it vaguely explains about a clause in the contract he signed with the Atlanta Falcons organization that under the Ashley Lelie law, Vick is entitled to a certain percentage of the signing bonuses he was awarded.
To some extent I believe that Vick is entitled to some of the cash he earned playing through his current contract. However, I do not believe that for such extreme actions he had performed that he should be entitled to any money. Vick broke a federal law, gambling and extortion, and a misdemeanor, dog fighting. On the other hand, the main focus has been placed on the cruel crimes he committed by training this dogs to fight and executing them.
There needs to be a clause implemented in all contracts that if any felony is committed or an act of cruelty as Vick did, then the contract should be void and only allowed to keep 5% of his contract earnings.

" Goodell's first year" vol 10, issue 19, pg 1,25
This article was discussing the kind of year that the new commissioner of the NFL Roger Goodell had. Starting off with the Pacman Jones situation and then the Chris Henry situation. Also the article spoke about the CBA (collective bargaining agreement).
I think that Goodell has made a name for himself with how strong he has come down on the players when I step out of line. In the past players would get into such trouble a DUI and they wouldn’t get in trouble with the nfl but with Goodell at the head everyone knows they will not be playing if they do anything wrong. I think that he is doing a good job; you can’t let the athletes think they are above the law and if they get into trouble they should be punished

"More NFL coaches are acting like CEO's" Vol 10. issue 19, Pg 1, 45, 46.
This article discusses how NFL head coaches are becoming more powerfull. Sean Payton, the head coach of the New Orleans saints totally redeisgned the teams meeting room. I think a head coach should have the freedom to do such things. If coaches in the NFL are going to be on such short leashes as they have been of late, they should have every opporutnity to take care of little things such as designs of locker rooms and such. I think that anything a coach can do to facilitate sucess at that level, should be done. I think this was a great article and was very informative about coaches around the league and and how powerfull the position is becoming.

"Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl" vol. 10 iss.19 pg.7
The decision to tear down the historic Orange Bowl Stadium will be a big hit to Miami history. It has become a landmark in the sports world. The 70 year old stadium has hosted superbowls and countless marquee games and is home to Miami U and FIU football.
I believe tearing the stadium down to possibly build a new facility for the Marlins would be a downgrade. The Marlins and MLB baseball are slowly loosing interest to sports fans. A facility for football should be the only thing to replace the Orange Bowl Stadium.

"Volume of lacrosse players outstripping NCAA's capacity"
V-10,I-19,PG-39
This article was quick to grab my attention. Not only because I am a lacrosse player but because you do not see much publicity on lacrosse.
AN overall review of the article is simple it states that over the past several years the popularity of lacrosse has nearly tripled. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the United States. As the article states lacrosse is the future of college athletics, and with the help of long time lacrosse lovers Roger Rydell, Jay Harkey and Tom Worstell that statment is on its way to becoming true.
I was extremly excited to see that this article was written. As a lacrosse player myself I for one know that there is not much room for youth lacrosse players to continue on to the college level. Only the elite make it. I think that within the next few years more colleges will try to incorporate men's and women's lacrosse into their programs. This is already visible to me because since I have been playing in the PSAC almost three new teams have joined.

“Flyers, Sixers Will give fans a crack at all you can eat seats”
There could be a new trend in advertising seats at sporting events and its called all you can eat steats. Whats going to happen is, when you buy tickets you will also purchase food and beverage with that. In my oppinoin this will deffinatly bring in a bigger crowd. Since one of the most complaints you here is how much a hotdog is or how much you have to pay for a soda, this does not include alcohol. The flyers have issued 325 seats that will package the all you can eat included with their ticket. This will help fill up the north east upper corner which is the last to fill durring the season.
Their marketing plan is to use the regular media and even emails to old season ticket holders, single ticket purchasers, and to groups. The NBA is upping the ante by selling 5 game packages that include all you can eat seats that will start at 140 dollars.

"EA eager to compete for share of sports space”.
V-10, I-19, pg 8
The article I chose to revue is titled “EA eager to compete for share of sports space”. It is about how Peter Moore, the new president of EA Sports, plans to continue the brands success in the sports video game market.
When asked how the process into the transition of next generation consoles was going, he replied that they are still in the early days of these consoles and that over the next seven to ten years many more consoles will be sold and therefore many more games will be sold.
When asked about video games entering unprecedented places, Peter replied that he intends to build EA Sports as a sports brand not just a video game brand. He said “I [Peter Moore] start to look at companies more like Nike as competitors for the share of mind in the sports space that we need to start looking at”.
Finally when asked how he planned on reaching more customers, he replied that he plans to use the Nintendo Wii as a bridge to new, lapsed and female gamers. Using these strategies he plans to expand the Ea Sports brand.

"ESPN spots introduce U.S. women's soccer 2.0" V10 I19 pg 12
I like the idea of ESPN trying to market women's soccer in the U.S. However, I don't believe it will help create a bigger fan base for the sport. When the women's team won the World Cup in 1999 the tournament was in the United States and the games were televised live and in prime time. With the games in China they will still be televised live, but they will be between 5-10 in the morning. If someone is awake at that time they will be getting ready for work and not wanting to watch a women's soccer game. As much of a soccer fan that I am I doubt I will even wake up early just to watch some of the women's world cup. It's a great idea for ESPN and I hope it works, I just don't think it will since the games are so early

"Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl" V-10, Issue 19, pg. 7
After 70 years of the Orange Bowl Stadium, Miami has decided to year it down. Now, the University of Miami will move it's home games to the newly remodeled Dolphin Stadium in 2008. I agree that the University of Miami should look for new alternatvies and make a new attraction for it's sports teams. I think moving their home games to a new stadium will benefit the school and athletic progam greatly. Sometimes getting a new facility will give the school more publicity and will even get more students to come there. A new alternative already talked about is a new ball park for the Florida Marlins.
Also, the stadium will be remembered more for its five
Super Bowls and Orange Bowls.

The city of Miami after this years football season have the decision to tear down the historic Orange bowl stadium, which has had 5 superbowls played in it. The university of Miami will be moving into dolphins stadium and share the stadium with the miami dolphins.
By tearing down the Orange Bowl which is historic will cause a lot of memories to be lost considering how many superbowls have been played there. But the city is debating on building the marlins new stadium where the orange bowl currently resides at, which i feel is a pretty good idea because the stadium they play in now, which is dolphins stadium, is not a baseball stadium and I believe that for baseball you need a stadium specifically made to play baseball in. And of course the orange bowl will be missed and most definitely no one will forget it either.

"Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl" vl. 10 issue.19 page.7
The article reviewed discussd the recent decision to destroy the Orange Bowl stadium at Miami University. The Orange Bowl is home to the Miami Hurricanes football team and Florida International University football team. Along with hostsing collegiate athletics The Orange Bowl has also hosted 5 Super Bowls in it’s existance. The University of Miami football team has now decided to have their home gamesat the newly renovated Dolphin stadium. A possiblity for new development on the land would be a new professional baseball park.
I some what agree with the tearing down of the stadium due to it’s old structure. On the other hand it would be more expensiive in the long run to renovate the stadium. When they do rebuild it will be a great factor in their recruiting players and attracted more diverese fans.
The success and history of the Miami Hurricanes will always be known. That is why the Marlins will not be able to draw in as big crowds as the Hurricanes do every year. Overall this will be a good move for the Miami Hurricanes.

"Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl"
Vol. 10, Iss. 19, Pg. 7
The city of Miami has decided to begin the process of tearing down Orange Bowl Stadium at the end of the 2007 college football season. The University of Miami football team will begin playing in the newly remodeled Dolphin Stadium starting in 2008. While the Orange Bowl Stadium certainly has historic significance, the city of Miami realizes the need to keep up with the trend of building new and improved facilities for its sports teams. Miami hasn't officially decided what will be built in place of the old stadium but one option is a new baseball stadium for the Florida Marlins. The Marlins have annually had poor attendence for their games and I feel this would be a great asset to the city and franchise in order to attract more fans in one of the most popular cities in America.

This article talks about how NFL Network plans to expand its network by adding two different shows. They will be "College Football Now" and "Put Up Your Dukes." Both shows will be 30 minutes long and will be aired in the 6-7 p.m. ET time slot.
I think this is a good move for the NFL Network because it is growing and becoming very popular with football fans. By adding college football to this program it will attract more people because some people are college football fans only and you will get these people also with the college shows. This great move by NFL Network will affect the industry because many football fans will only want to watch football. Therefore, this will draw more people from watching ESPN to the NFL Network, because they are focusing on only one sport. Football.

"Will Nike let Federer walk away?"
vol 10, issue 19, pg4
This article talks about Nike, and the decsion that the company has on its hands. The company endorses tennis icon, Roger Federer, but now his contract is about to come to an end. Federer represents himself, and it is said amoung agents that the contract he has now is "trash." Now Federer has an agent, Tony Godsick of IMG, and is reportedly asking for $5 million in guaranteed money. Which is a stepup from his $1 to $2 million that he gets now. Nike is confronted with the problem of deciding whether to drop Roger Federer, and in place, just keep the up n coming tennis star Rafeal Nadal. Nadal is said to be flashier, and more fan friendly than is Federer which in turns means more money for Nike.
I think that its only logical that you would keep both. Roger Federer, however boring he may be is probably the best tennis player we have ever seen. Paying him the money is something he deserves not only for him, but because it will pay off for Nike in the long run. Federer is trancending the sport of tennis, kids and adult tennis players alike will be lineing up to look like he does and to try and immulate what he does. The same can be said for Rafael Nadal too, so why not keep them both. If money is the issue than you have a problem.Do you pick the best player and icon or one of the best and a superstar?

"More NFL coaches are acting like CEOs"
Vol-10 Issue 19 Pg. 1 and 45
This article written by Bruce Schoenfeld is an excellent story of how coaches are trying to be more like CEOs and general managers along with being the head coach of a football team. The article talks about sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints, for example. It talks about the fact that before Payton came to New Orleans he expected that things around the locker room and such would be more Black and Gold. he wanted everything to look like he expected it to look. Mike Nolan the new head coach of the San Fransisco 49ers doid not take the job until he was promised that he would have a say in some of the business decisions of the team.
I really think that it is a good thing that Head Coaches get involved in the day to day decision of the orginization because nobody should know more about the team then the head caoch himself. I think that Coaches should be more involved then maybe they are now, or as involved as some coaches like Bill Bellichick of the Patroits or Mike Shanahan of the Broncos is with there respected teams. The reason this is important, I think is so that the head coach can help with marketing his own team. He knows that most about the players and who should be out on the field and who is best for the team and the orginization as a whole.
Finnally I believe that coaches that are more like CEOs are going to be more successfull because they are going to know more of what is going on with the team. Look at some of the most involved coaches in the league like Billicheck and Shanahan, they are two of the most successful coaches in the league and they are very involed in the team and like to act like CEOs.

"WCSN strikes deal with FoxSports.com"
vol 10 issus 19 pg 10
World Championship Sports Network agreed to a multiyear distribution deal with FoxSports.com to provide Olympic coverage to the MSN affiliate. WCSN will have a channel on FoxSports.com under the "More Sports" category. Visitors to the site will be able to access exclusive sports the world-record video in the "Olympic Section". WCSN also has agreements with Yahoo!, AOL and Break.com. Since joining with Yahoo!, WCSN has had three times as many visitos.
I think this was a good idea because more people will be able to view the videos and the athletes will in turn become better known. WCSN benefited since signing with Yahoo! so they should also benefit from joining with FoxSports.com. This will help the Olympics become more well-known worldwide.

"ESPN Spots Introduce U.S. Women's Soccer 2.0"
volume 10, issue 19, pg 12
This article discusses how important it is for the U.S. Women's soccer team to be be promoted over the next few weeks because of the World Cup taking place in Beijing, China. The U.S. team is going into the World Cup ranked as the number one team. The commercials will show three of the biggest players to star on the team.
I think that promoting women's soccer will be beneficial. I went to a game this summer in Cleveland, and that particular game had a pretty decent number of fans. However, women's soccer is one of the sports with not too many dedicated fans. I feel that if ESPN does promote the women's team like they should be that it will possibly help to reach a more potential fan base, in the future.
The only downfall to ESPN and ESPN2 is the time differential between the two countries. The games will be aired very early in the morning in the U.S. , but I hope that people will still watch and support the U.S. women's team.

WILL NIKE LET FEDERER WALK AWAY?
This article was about weather NIKE should let go of Roger Federer as an endorser of NIKE. He will be demanding atleast a 5 million dollar contract to guarentee him all of that 5 million.
I think that they should just let him go. I say this because they also have Rafael Nadal as an endorser, and he is up and coming.
He is a lot younger than Federer and has beaten him several times, so why not save some money and give the youngster the long term deal and let Federer, considering he is getting older. This was a interesting article, and I enjoyed reading it.

Bon Jovi takes lead for MLB playoffs on TBS
Stefano Fina
Volume 10
Issue 18
Page 10
TBS is planning on showing a two and a half minute clip of Bon Jovi’s song “I Love This Town” in an effort to promote the Major League Baseball playoffs on their TV station. I personally feel that this will not help promote the MLB in anyway, but it will also not hurt them. I don’t see how anybody is going to come across a Bon Jovi song and then think to themselves, “man, I really need to watch the MLB playoffs.” I think it is more important to market actual things with the game you are promoting, whether it is the history of baseball, catching up with hall of famers, or promoting the stars of today.
From Bon Jovi’s prospective, a lot of baseball fans may come across this song while watching a baseball game and want to go out and buy their album. Anytime a song is associated with a sports highlight reel it is always a good promotion for that song.

ESPN TO 'take some chances' against nfl v10 iss-18 pg 3
espn is trying to compete with nbc on sunday nights, which host the sunday night football games at 8:00 pm every sunday during football season. Last year espn tried to play nba games. The ratings were good but didnt beat nbc's, sunday night football, ratings. Espn this year instead of having basketball it will have the remainder of the baseball seasons sunday night baseball, nascar programming and college football games on.
I feel that in order to compete with sunday night football its going to be hard. By putting pennant race baseball games on its a good things because i know once its gets down to the wire in baseball i get interested. But once is over they are going to have some problems. Putting College football instead of nba games is a big plus though, people dont start watching basketball until at least mid november, or maybe thats just me.

"Right Place, Right Team" v-10, issue 20, pg 1-35
The article is about a camera crew from SportSouth that had been following the team throughout there training camp and also with the team the week they went to play Michigan. They were following the team because a reality show about the team that was going to 30 min long. After the game, in which App State won, which nobody thought they would beat one of the best teams in college football history, the manager of the camera crew called and said the show would be taken to an hour long. Probably the biggest upset in college football history and this SPortsouth camera crew had it all on tape, it had the pregame, the halftime emotions and even after the game when the team was celebrating.
What are the odds of this SportSouth crew to be there and have it all on film when a D1 AA team upsets a team battling for the national championship. I am happy for them i hope it will bring them more attention in the future. I hope I get a chance to watch the show when it comes out. I think that App State is a good football team and people shouldn’t look at certain divisions and think just because a team is not major division 1 that they aren’t any good. Never look over a game, which will be the won you will lose

"Snap decision or good strategy?" Vol.10, Iss. 20, pg.17
The article I chose discussed the decision schools face when deciding whether to jump to Division 1 or not. The obvious reason and only reason if ya ask me is because of the money. History has shown that some teams have had much trouble fitting in while others have taken only a few years to blend right in with the rest of the Division 1 teams.
Schools such as Buffalo and Middle Tennessee State have struggled to find success in Division 1 so far. However, teams such as Boise State and Connecticut have put their names on the map with bowl appearances. It is shocking how these teams have been able to have instant success due to the lack of popularity of High School football in their regions.
I feel it is a good idea for teams to jump to D-1 if they know they can actually succeed. It is not a good idea for a team that lacks the money and tools to be able to recruit legit D-1 athletes.

ESPN to 'take some chances' against NFL v10 iss-18 pg 3
ESPN is trying to strategize ways to compete against NBC’s Sunday Night Football at 8:00 pm every Sunday night. They feel that people don’t watch the whole NFL game, and when they go to turn the channel they have a good possibility that they will turn to ESPN and that will continue to raise their ratings. The NBA tried to compete before in this slot but weren’t as successful as NBC. NBC’s ratings actually increased and the NBA didn’t do the numbers they thought they would do. This year ESPN will show baseball, NASCAR, and college football games. These sports aren’t as popular as Sunday night football but taking risks is the key to success. This marketing idea may be a good one because they are putting college football games on and a lot of people shoe interest in watching these games. It is still going to be hard to compete with the NFL but it won’t hurt to try. They are already rich as a corporation so taking a chance this year won’t hurt. It might actually work out and they might be able to do this every year.

"Proposed Changes in Spectrum Pose Danger to Sports Technology"
V-10, I-20, Pg 28
This article deals with a new group called the White Space Coalition. This group wants to make the "in between" channels that exist on radio waves for consumers to use freely. The issue is that currently these channels are being used by professional sport leagues for their wireless equipment. I feel that it is a bad idea for the use of these channels to be available to consumers on a large basis because it is commonly known that these channels are used. If sport leagues were fighting for the use of these channels I would likely feel differently, however, since the leagues have used these channels for a while I believe that it isnt fair to interfere with that. Also some of the wireless equipment may be used for safety. In Nascar a driver can talk directly to his crew chief, and if there is any problem with the car it can be reported and can be dealt with before the problem gets worse. If the White Space Coalition can provide evidence that there would be no interference with the wireless technology already in use, I would see no problem with it, but as of now I believe it is a bad idea.

"Right place, right team"
Volume 10 Issue 20 Pg. 1,35
This article explains how SportSouth (which is a camera crew that is linked with Appalachian State University's football program) happened to be in the right place at the right time. SportSouth managed to capture the shocking victory over Michigan on Sept. 1, 2007. They were side-by-side with the team; filming inside the Appalachian State locker room before the game, halftime, and post game. They also have footage of training camp and even went to the extent of tagging along with some of the players as they attended class.
I feel this article is very good. It explains how a little school that many have never heard of became the center of attention on college footballs opening weekend. I think its positive for a Cinderella story like this to occur, because it draws more media to small-conference schools. This will affect the industry by media covering various schools and retail sprees will trigger due to this shocking victory. Now viewers will be able to view how the Mountaineer’s prepared to enter "The Big House" and came out victorious. The one-hour reality show will be a hit and will draw many viewers.

“Snap decision or good strategy?" Volume.10, Issue. 20, page.17
With in this article review the main point discussed was whether or not schools should go into to Division 1 athletics or not. The only reason for schools to go D1 is for the financial benefits. Looking back at history it has been prove that for a team enter a D1 conference they will see much difficulty blending in and or adapting to the competition level, while others have been running a competitive race for years.
Buffalo University, UCF and Middle Tennessee State have been trying to find some success in Division 1 athletics but have not succeeded so far. On the other hand, teams such as Boise State, Wake Forest and Connecticut have put their title on display by having great seasons followed by a few bowl appearances.
I believe that it is not a bad idea for athletic programs to go D-1, but they must at least have good sport background or else it will be a failure and embarrassment. An atelic program must have the essentials to be able to recruit and train their athletes, if this is not the case then going to a D1 division is a terrible idea.

This article discusses Appalatician State's incredible upset of Michigan and the camera crew documenting the event. SportSouth was shooting a documentary on the ASU football team, culminating with the game at Michigan. The producers never imagined they would cover the biggest upset in college football history. They had followed the players from the start of training camp and in the documentary you get to know them very well. The game against Michigan shows you that if you believe in yourself and do everything you can to win nobody can stop you.

ESPN to "take some chances" against NFL:
This article was about how ESPN was going to take some chance and air different sporting events to compete with Sunday night football on NBC. This is a risky thing to do, because it is obvious that the NFL is a powerhouse when it comes to television ratings. Usually when someone trys to do this they usually fail.
If there is someone that could make this close I think that it would be ESPN, but it is still a long shot. ESPN is giong to show events such as baseball, college footabll, and the final two weeks of the NASCAR race for the chase standings. The college football and the NASCAR are two events that are heavily watched every week, so those two could really give ESPN a chance to get close in the ratings, but the only bad thing about the college games is that the matchups that are to be shown are not very appealing. Overall, I must say that even though ESPN is showing a great effort, there is no way that they will find greater ratings on Sundays nights when sunday night football is on, there is no one that can compete with the ratings that it will receive.

By putting on these pennant race baseball games is a good idea because when it gets down to the wire for baseball people do start to watch it a lot more. But once the baseball season is over that's where ESPN will run into a problem. However, putting college football on ESPN is actually a really good idea because it seems to me from talking to a lot of people they are more interested in college sports than pro sports. People are more interested in watching college sports because they know the athletes aren't just there for the money. Plus people don't start watching basketball until at least mid-season mostly around more of the winter months.

This article is about Versus being able to sign a deal to telecast its first college football bowl game. The game wil be in January with the all-star Hula Bowl. Being that Espn had the right to the bowl game since 94 and they believed this was the yr to switch the home of the game around. The Vice President of Versus believes by having the game this will allow them to get more college football rights. Having this game starts the slow building of the college frachise and it helps broaden their audience Jeff Goldberg believes. Versus will also continue to bid on college football and basketball as the rights come up. To make this game big Versus will promote this whole season. I believe if promotion is good Versus will have a success and this will allow them to build for the future

[Week 2]"Jets-Giants getting $1M for top suites"
V-10, I-20, p. 1 & 36
This article is written about the new Meadowlands stadium opening for the New York Jets and New York Giants football teams in 2010. The stadium will have 150 to 200 suites. The prime suites will be available for a pricetag of $1 million dollars per year. The Dallas Cowboy's new stadium has already sold their prime suites for the new norm of $1 million per suite per year.
Personally, I think this is completely ludicrous and I don't think if I had the money I would pay that much to watch a football game. The average price is around 300,000 for the stadium. The suites include both Giants and Jets games, possibly international soccer matches, possibly NCAA final four, the super bowl, and the cotton bowl. That is a lot of entertainment and some people have the money to do it.

Snap Decision Or Good Strategy...
This article discusses football programs move from I-AA to I-A and the challenges the programs face trying to do so. I-A currently is home to 120 teams in college football and doesn't plan on allowing a whole lot more teams in. There are a few teams who have allready begun the process trying to make the move to play with the big boys who might have a shot a couple years down the road. The article also discusses the financial problems involved in making the move from a smaller division. While there are many benefits from coming to a bigger league like a bigger revenue for the program the competition level is such an increase many teams get embarassed week in and week out and begin failing to fill the stands. If the program doesnt do something about it's record within a few years the program could go in to debt so far it could be lost. Not to mention moving to a higher level of pay requires more stadium seating better practice facilities and a bigger athletic department staff. Moving up also requires that you hand out more scholarship money so where do schools get this money from? Sponsorships are a big part of the programs revenue along with product sales. Winning of course is the easy way to make a success of a program, the more you win the more people come to see you the more you make. But for teams just entering D1 that is much easier said than done.

"Bottled up: Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales at Bucs games"
v-10,I-20, pg 13
This article discussed the importance of keeping liquor under control at the Tampa Bay Bucs games. Levy Restaurant in Raymond James Stadium was denied the right to sell hard liquor. Yes, alcohol is a big ticket item for bringing in revenue. However, I do think that people do get out of hand.
Drewes and Young believe that many people get out of hand at tailgaiting parties. On the other hand, they feel that if they would totally eliminate the sale of alcohol that people would be fully loaded before they even entered the gates.
Basically, the point is that they want to continue selling alcohol, but they want to reduce it so that fans will stay in control.

"Bottled up: Tampa Keeps limits on Liquor sales at Bucs games" V-10, I-20, pg-13
This article discusses the Tampa Bay Bucs wanting to sell mixed drinks at games, and officials denying the request. I think this would actually be a good idea and would increase concessions. There are some people that just do not like beer and wine, and would prefer some kind of mixed drink. The article makes a good point that most people that get excessively drunk do it while tailgating. If shots were not offered and just mixed drinks I don't think there would be a problem.
However, if they feel people would get too out of hand, they could set limitations on drinks purchased by that person. Other stadiums offer hard liquior and do not suffer problems because of it, it's because of the tail gating that takes place prior to the game. I think selling hard liquior would dramatically increase concession sales and therefore increase profit.

The article is about channel SportSouth that had been a camera crew and had been following the Appalachian State through there training camp and also with the team the week they went to play Michigan. It was supposed to be a reality show on it also. This channel caught probably one of the biggest upsets in College Football history in my opinion. It will be a huge hit when it comes out, people might even tape it to have history but this will also boost SportSouth in ratings and will help them grow. This will also help the sport of football i think in some ways and not to take anyone lightly no matter what level a team is on. It might also help Appalachian get little more funding by SportSouth would maybe give them some money and maybe get Appalachian State to Division 1 Level. So i think this is a great thing all around!

Volume 10 Issue 20 Pg. 1,35
This article explains how a camera crew, SportSouth, captured histroy while filming Appalachian State, I-AA, beating Michigan, ranked I-A. The camera crew was filming for a special called "Under the Lights" where they follow a team through training camp, practices, and up to the first game of the year. What happened during that first game of the year, no one would have ever imagined. The crew caught all the emotion during pre-game, halftime, and the post-game celebration. The special was to oringinally air for a 30 min slot but now realizing what they have on tape, will be an hour special with memorial DVD's to follow.
Right place, Right team sums it up perfectly. This game will forever be remembered, as it should be. The publicity this is getting is setting record high sales for Appalachian State apparrel. This game is going to help the college is almost every aspect imaginable. It will help with recruiting, ticket sales, merchandise, and any advertising they wish to do.

Program Convinces Students that attendance has its rewards"
Volume 10 Issue 20 Page 14
This article discusses the use of the TicketReturn system. The TicketReturn system is being used at the collegiate level to build attendance at games. Many colleges are having problems with attendance and have decided to start a points and rewards system. So far it has been a success.
The system allows for the college to set the point. They can decided how long a student needs to stay at an event in order for the points to count and the system has made ticket lines easier to go through.
Being a SPorts Administration major we discuss often different ways to build attendance at sporting events. This is an amazing idea. If IUP offered the TicketReturn system, I know that the attendance would go up.

NFL-Themed sponsor spending will hit estimated $1.1B
From pre-season games to the Super Bowl the NFL is predicting they will spend an estimated 1.1 Billion dollars on ads such as T.V, digital photo’s, displays, and many others. This is an increase in marketing of ten percent from last year. Their big selling point this year is using big named NFL players like Super Bowl MVP Payton Manning, last years rookie sensation Reggie Bush, the best all around running back LaDainian Tomlinson, and Seattle Seahawks Quarter Back Matt Hasselbeck as well as 160 other players. These players will be involved in over twenty plus T.V ads over this season which will hopefully sell more NFL tickets, apparel, or even television ratings. The NFL has also resigned sponsors like Cannon, Samsung, Campbell soup, and Prilosec for this up coming season, plus they singed up with Bank of America.

"ESPN to take some chances against NFL"
Vol. 10 Iss. 20 Pg. 3
This season on Sunday night's ESPN is planning on taking chances for better ratings against NBC during their Sunday Night Football broadcasts. Last season ESPN aired three NBA games during November, but the ratings were not very good so this season ESPN plans to change their approach. They are gonna air some Major League Baseball games, NCAA football games, a few NCAA basketball games, and a few special programs including racing specials.
I don't think taking these chances will help ESPN's ratings. Maybe some of the weeks their ratings will be better than last years but for the most part the games that are scheduled to air on each network, the ones on NBC are more attractive to watch. Especially when ESPN is airing the motorsports specials, I don't see them getting very good ratings at all during those broadcasts against the NFL's Sunday night line up.

Program convinces students that attendance has its rewards V 10 I 20 Pg 14
This article is about a new marketing strategy to improve student attendance at campus events as well as sporting events. It is a new ticketing system for students that one; makes it easier for them to get tickets and two the ability to have priority access to certain games. The system works from barcodes printed on the tickets. For each ticket that is purchased to an event, the student receives points toward priority access to future premium events, such as rivalry games and high profile opponent games. Students earn points based on the events they attend. More points are awarded for less attractive events attended. The system has a data base that is linked to the students, alumni and season ticket holders so they can see who is leading the points race. This new effort to increase attendance is create more revenue for the universities and thus give them more power to negotiate with corporate donations.
I think this is a great marketing idea. I know that many students do not attend campus events because of the area the students are forced to sit in, or the event it just not interesting. If students has the opportunity to sit in a better seat or get free food at an event I think they would be highly more likely to attend. By offering these promotions, it will also build school spirit around campus and some competition campus wide. Whether or not a student is going to an event because they want to or just for the points, why not support the team while you are there. This may also improve the play on the field which could earn more money for the sports team each year in grants and things of that nature. If a team is performing poorly, they are less likely to receive funding to improve facilities and get new equipment. With the student body behind them at each game they will be driven to play harder, improving there record, possible pushing some athletes into the next level of play and earn more money for the school. Overall, again I think this is a great idea to improve attendance.

Last year the NBA numbers were good but not great for ESPN. Since the numbers weren't great, ESPN is replacing NBA with piggybacking on NASCAR programming. Also, ESPN has scheduled baseball programming on four Sundays and college football at eight.
I think that it's not a bad move by ESPN to change some things and see if numbers get higher from replacing the NBA. Change isn't necessarily a bad thing and if the numbers do go down, ESPN can change back to the NBC or try something different again.

“Soccer Tours Deliever for Marketing Firm”
V-10, Issue 20 pg 4
The article discusses how the marketing agency called Kentaro Group is cashing in on the national appearances of champion soccer teams such as Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Ireland and Argentina. Kentaro represents all five of these teams. The company set up two friendly games for Brazil versus the U.S. national team and the Mexican national team. These friendly games are said to deliver $4 million to $5 million each to Kentaro whether it is from sponsorship and television rights or attendance. This company makes more income because of a guaranteed appearance fee of more than $1 million a game and the right to sell all of the international TV rights for the games. Kentaro has international TV deals from everywhere, which are bringing in great amounts of money. Along with this Kentaro sells sponsorships for the Brazil World Tour. Kentaro will pay for Brazil’s expenses for the trip while they’re on tour. This just shows their partnership. Brazil is a very well known team and they are helping Kentaro spread their name. They are giving Kentaro a chance to put their name out there. I think it’s a great idea for Brazil and Kentaro to work together. Both are benefiting in the end so it’s not a problem. Brazil has their expenses paid for by Kentaro and Kentaro is getting their company name spread by popular team full of celebrities.

"Right Place, Right Team"

Andrew VanHorn
This article in the Sport Journal by Michael Smith talks about how a camara crew from sports south followed the Appalachian state Mountaneers around before the season and through training camp up to the game they played the Michigan Wolverines. Michigan was ranked #5 in the the nation and Appalachian State is in the college football subdivision, formally division 1-AA. Maraculasly the Mountaineers beat the Wolverines and the biggest upset in college football history was now all on tape and chronicaled by a sports TV station that was just looking for a good story. Now they have a fantastic story. Within hours of the game the show was made an hour instead of the scheduled half hour.
I think this is an amazing story and it is something that I personally would love to see now, while before the game against Michigan I would not have cared at all to watch it. I think that this show will help the sports south have higher ratings and it will help appalachian States recruting along with I believe will help boost the campus as a whole. This truly is an amazing story that can be re-lived because a camara crew really was at the right place at the right time.
Another side of this article was that Appalachian States Appearal went through the roof after this big win. Which in turn will bring more money into the school which will again help this school out.
This is the biggest win that a school in college footballs sub division could possibly have. It was said in the article that they did get half this attention when they won the national championship the last two seasons. I think it is really cool that I TV station was able to chronical all that led up to the biggest upset in college football history.

"Jets-Giants getting $1M for top suites." V-10 Issue 20 Pg 1, 36.
When the Jets and the Giants open their new stadium in New Jersey in the year 2010, they will be recieving 1 million dollars per suite. The suites will be good for both Jets and Giants home games which amounts to about 20 events.
In Dallas, Jerry Jones is building a new stadium for the Dallas Cowboys. They will be leasing their suites, all 200 of them for just ten home games. The suites would also be good for other events such as the final four, a Super Bowl, and the Cotton Bowl. The average price for a suite this year in the NFL is $60,000. When the stadium opens it will be fully equiped with High Def inition televisions throughout the stadium and including the scoreboads.
Football is the premier form of entertainment in the United States today and the market for the sports will coninue to grow.

This article talks about how the New York Mets are planning to show one of there games against there rival the Philadelphia Phillies in a Manhattan movie theater. Tickets are 10 dollars and the theater seats over 1,000 people. With this new three way contract every ticket holder at the theater will get 2 free tickets to an up coming game against the Braves. The thought is to get the younger viewers more interested in the franchise and trying to brand the team. The Mets are not the first team to do this, the Red Sox are not entering there 4th season with a contract with a movie theater

"Bottled up: Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales at Bucs games"
vol. 10 issue 20 pg. 13
The city of Tampa denied the request to sell hard liquor in public areas at Raymond James Stadium. Officials are very conservative when considering whether the sports facilities they control can sell booze. Council members believe Bucs fans already have enough opportunities to drink during the NFL games.
I think this is a bad decision because now the social drinker does not have the opportunity to purchase alcohol and the organization is losing money. I also agree that the fans that do want to drink during the games will engage in pregame drinking. These fans will feel compelled to drink to their upper limits before they enter the stadium. This will most likely lead to more security problems.

"FedEx Cup playoff events report big sales increase"
V-10,I-20,pg4
This article is about how that they might not have reached a verdict on the PGA Tour's inaugural FedEx Cup, but they have gotten reports from the directors that they made so much money in the four playoffs. At the four tournaments they made a lot of money by selling all the tickets and clubs.
Even at the Barclays at Westchester Counrty Club in New York. Tiger Woods was not even at this tournament and sales were great and doing incline. They sold out of hospitality for the first time and general admission. As for the TV it was growing fast. The Deutsche Bank gained an extra hour on the TV.
As to what I say about this article is that it's great that they are getting more money from fans of the golf world. I think it's also great to see that people will still show up without having big people who golf.

Right Place, Right Team
V-10 I - 20
This article talks about a video crew that was at the Appalachian State vs. Michigan game. I chose this article because I author highlight films as a hobby. It is a matter of being at the right place at the right time. This camera crew was filming becuase the are doing a show similar to a reality show. Being that they filmed the game that made history when Michigan lost they have been offered alot of money and are going to be able to capitalize on this historic event.

"Right place, right team"
Vol. 10, Iss. 20, Pg 1
This article talks about a recording company who was embedded with the Appalachian State football team during their historic win over Michigan two weeks ago. The company, SportSouth, had been following the NCAA Division 1-AA football team since training camp and planned on airing a show talking about the team. They never imagined that they would be filming history when App. State shocked Michigan and the entire football world with a thrilling 34-32 victory. I think this exposure for a smaller school is great and will prove to be a worthy show about a great football program. Hopefully this win will motivate other small schools to take on the football powerhouses and not just play on the same field as them, but know that they have the chance to beat them.

"A new jersey super bowl? new stadium" again raises question. vol 10 i-21
This article talks about the city of New york wanting to host a superbowl. The new stadium that will be opening in 2010 is suppose to be state of the art, as good as it gets. But the problem is the stadium will be open air, meaning that it wont have a roof. Even though new york is a booming city the climate isn't quite right for a superbowl which is played usually first of feb.
I personally think that they should keep the superbowl in a warm weather location. If you would look at the past superbowls that were played in cooler climates the income that was made wasnt as much then when they played in a warmer climate. New york would definately be a closer drive from here to florida but its not going to bring in as many fans.

Flyers, Sixers will give fans a crack at all you can eat seats
The Philadelphia hockey and basketball teams are now offering certain seats for more money, but they are now “all you can eat seats.” I feel this is a great idea to sell seats that were previously tough to sell, as many people feel that part of the experience of going to a pro sports game is to eat the food there. This give the Flyers and Sixers chances to raise the prices on these seats as well. I think it is overall a good idea that will now bring in more people to seats that were tough to sell in the past.
The only problem with the all you can eat seats is that they only way the people in those seats are designated as all you can eaters are by a wristband. Who is to say that those won’t be stolen, or that people will bring in similar wrist bands of their own to try to steal the food? That is the only problem I see with this idea; other than that I think it is a great way to bring in more people.

"Enhanced media coverage adds to perception"
V-10, I-21, pg 23
This article focuses on how the media brings professional athletes into the spotlight by exposing all of the bad things they do. Most recently is the Michael Vick/dog fight story. There seems to be coverage on it everyday. The Vice President of ESPN John Walsh, watched a piece presented on an NFL player and on of his old coaches that kept him on the right path. He felt it was a touching and good publicity for the athlete and team. However, someone turned around and inquired to his personal life.
Frankly, I don't care about all the crap that athlete's and celebrities get themselves into. Half the time they aren't appropriately charged for what they did, if illegal, and when they are punished accordingly, some lawyer says they weren't treated fair because of their name. I would much rather see good news pieces and things that promote positive images of the team. Yeah if some idiot runs an illegal dog fighting circus in his back yard I'd like to hear about it and that's it. Not this everyday stuff, it's simply annoying.

"A new jersey super bowl? new stadium" again raises question. vol 10 i-21 pg 13
This article deals with the issue of a cold weather city hosting a super bowl. The article focuses on the fact that the Jets and Giants are building a new stadium they hope to open in 2010, at which time it appears they will place an application to host the super bowl. the article also shows that the Jets and Giants have a different view of their chance to host the game. The Jets believe they have a good shot at hosting the game, while the Giants are less optamistic.
I believe that the Jets and Giants should be allowed to host the super bowl as well as other cold weather cities. I dont believe it is fair that only the same locations are able to reap the benefits of hosting the super bowl, while other cities never get a chance, even some cities that do not have a team like Pasadena and the Rose bowl. Although the super bowl is about the money the NFL makes off it, it is still about the game and fans, and true fans will go to any city to watch the super bowl regardless of the weather.

Hot summer sales steer NBA toward another gate record
p.5
Vol 10
Issue 21
The NBA has already surpassed their season ticket sales form last year. The ticket sales are up 40% and they are the verge of a new record of sales. Half of the league of the league is renewing its season ticket sales at 90%. 10 of the 30 teams have 10,000 full season ticket sales; this is an all time high. Last year it was only 9 teams and already this years they are at 10 teams and they are expecting 13 or 14 teams to reach this point. With this increase teams have to increase their staff and their training. This increase caused staffs to increase 30%. This is bigger that they were three years ago.
Many teams are reaching this 10,000 mark but the team with the biggest increase is in Utah. They are at a 5,000 new full season ticket sales, and they have a chance of surpassing the Miami Heat record of 8,000 new season tickets sales.
This NBA season is seeing more sales than ever right now. The games averaged a record of 17,757 fans last year and they are up 1% from the 05-06 season.

Only in Rare Cases do misdeeds cost athletes.
Vol. 10 Pg 25
This article is about how athletes are losing money from endorsements and basically money forfeited. It talks about how the league and especially Roger Goodell have crack downed on how NFL player act out of football. I found out something new reading this article that under new collective bargaining agreements teams cannot collect signing money back if contracts were signed after the 2005 season. The new NFL was extended in 2006 places many limit on how the teams may get some of the money back especially bonuses which is a big part of NFL player compensation. This new agreement says that teams can get some of the money back if they retire or if a player holds out not for conduct issues.
I believe that player’s bonuses should be paid yearly to protect the organization. If a player does something after they were paid for that year the next tear they wouldn’t be paid I think this will be a smart way of making the players think about what there doing before they do it.
Thursday, September 20, 2007 8:03:00 PM
This artical focuses on the building of a new stadium but not just for the Jets but for the Giants as well. In 2010 both teams expect to have a new stadium erected and they are both putting in there applications for hosting the super bowl. So what do you think about a cold possibly snowning day for the superbowl?
This is just my opinion; I think that the super bowl should be played in fairly good conditions, because this is the moment where your team can show off there skill as a team. in conditions where it is snowing or bitter cold any team could win and maybe thats the fun of it, but i think that it should be in fair or better wheater so the teams can focus on doing there best with out the nerveousness of all the turn overs bad weather would cause.

"Enhanced media coverage adds to perception"
V-10, I-21, pg 23
This article was about how professional athletes are always brought into the spot light by the media exposing all the negative things about them. For instance the Mike Vick dog fighting incident, there was people talking about it everyday through out the world probably. Also in the article it talked about the Vice President of espn John Walsh, and how the interview of mike Vicks old high school head coach and how he tried to keep him on the right path in his life but someone ended up doing an article about the interview and making it into a bad review.
Personally I hate this part of the sports industry. All these reporters want to always point out the bad things athletes do but they always over look the good things they do for people. Like you never hear about how Warrick Dunn of the Atlanta Falcons buys homes and puts all the furniture into them and everything and gives it away to a mother that cant afford it every year. But if he was to do something bad I’m sure we would hear about it that same day. I just wish there was an equal amount on both sides of the spectrum. Point out the good just as much as they do the bad.

"MLS beefing up team services; NBA vet Mott will run division"
Vol. 10 Iss. 21 pg. 33
Major League Soccer is following the lead of the NHL and NFL and using an expanded club and team services division to encourage teams to share best-practice ideas in their marketing schemes. The MLS has hired a former NBA employee, Paul Mott, to be the head of the division throughout Major League Soccer.
I think this is a step in the right direction for the MLS. Since they have already been an established league for 10 years they are almost a sure thing to stick around, and now they are doing things to improve the quality of their league. As it states in the article, teams like Los Angeles Galaxy and D.C. United attract bigger crowds and with the new division they are starting these teams can share with the other teams on how to market their product better to achieve higher ticket sales.

"Hot Summer Sales Steer NBA Towards Another Gate Record"
Vol 10, I-21, P.5
This article is about how the ticket sales have been rising in the basketball world. The NBA has expanded in their ticket sales from last year. From last year the sales are up 40% and seem to be making new records. About 90% of the leagues ticket sales have already been renewed. Already 10 of the 30 teams have 10,000 full season tickets. The NBA is expecting 13 or 14 teams to reach this point in sales.
With the increase in ticket sale the NBA is finding that they are going to need to increase their staff. Also they have found that with the increase in sale they found that Utah has the biggest increase.Utah has a chance in passing the Miami Heat in tickets sales. Miami record last year was 8,000 and already Utah has 5,000 sales and is increasing. The sales last year brought 17,757 fans and this year already they are up 1% in ticket sales.

"A New Jersey Super Bowl? New Stadium Again Raises Question."
V-10, I-21, P-13
The Jets and Giants are building a new state of the art stadium. They are hoping to be able to bring the Super Bowl to town.
I could agree with both sides. Some don't want to host the super bowl in a cold weather city without being in a dome. I think that all fans should have the opportunity to go to a super bowl somewhere near their home instead of having to travel hundreds of miles to see the game. The game should be played in optimal conditions instead of the rain or snow. In a dome however, you have to deal with incredibly loud fan noise. One could also argue that the teams play in random weather conditions all year long so why not in the super bowl? It would certainly make things interesting.
By hosting the game in a warm weather city, there is a better chance of sunny weather for the people to enjoy for the week preceding the super bowl. This is also a good thing for the vendors around the stadium all week long.

"Nets search preps for big names, games" Vol. 10, Iss. 21, Pg. 8-9
This article discusses how ESPN will be televising High School Football across the nation. They are doing this to create interest in well-known schools, potential stars and other top recruits that college fans are eager to see. An aspect the article touches on how ESPN will be in Cherry Creek on Oct. 12, 2007 to televise the game verses Grandview (Colo.). This is mostly because John Elway is the QB coach for his highly recruited son Jack.
I believe this is a great move that ESPN is making during this football season. Millions of fans across the country are interested in high school football and by displaying the best teams and players on ESPN, it will create a buzz. I think that numerous people will be watching when Cherry Creek plays on ESPN, because they will be interested to see John Elway and his son teaming up together and see the different aspects of coaching and parenting that goes on with celebrity players.

A New Jersey Super Bowl? New Stadium Again Raises Questions
Vol-10, issue-21 pg.13
A new stadium is being built for the New York Giants and the New York Jets, with hopes of hosting a super bowl in the future. With this attraction is sure to come revenue that will benefit both teams as well as the city of New York, since the will have a home game almost every week of the football season. Also if a super bowl would be held there revenue would triple in a week, due to the frenzy that comes with the super bowl plus being in a bigger city like New York.
Unfortunately, when there are pros to an idea there is always con’s. I big problems with having a super bowl in New York is the weather. January and February are usually part of the winter months. That could hold an ugly game in the eyes of most people and who wants to watch an ugly game, or to pay a lot of money for a ticket and sit in the freezing cold to watch a game. In my opinion they should just have them in the warmer climate areas or in domes so it is a nice even game. The cold may favor on team over the other, but the problem is fans want to see the better team win the way they have been playing all year long. So if that is passing the snow or rain could affect that. Also this could really hurt revenue for the super bowl and you can never mess with the NFL’s money. That’s why I believe the NFL will keep it how it is, so more people can just enjoy super bowl week in the warm weather.

"Economic Damage from athlete misdeeds remains undetermined"
Vol 10. pg 16
After all that the Atlanta Falcons have gone through, they are still going through some more. In the aftermath of the Micheal Vick situation, the falcons are trying to asses the damages done to the organization. The actions taken by the owner and coach of the team has been supported by many around the team. So the support system is still there, but what will be lost is still the question they are wondering. As of now memebers in the organization say it is hard to delegate a number on the damages or actually pinpoint them. But they will be able to know as time goes on. The Falcons were hit with a bomb when this situation came up, and now they are trying to deal with it. There focus is now on filling up the seats for there home opener and they think that there doesn't seem to be a drop off in fans since vick has been gone. They feel that people want to see the team do good overall, so it doesn't matter who or what stars they have lost, they just want to see the team win.

"Bottled up: Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales at Bucs games"
V-10, I-20, pg 13
This article is about Tampa officials refusal to allow hard liquor sales during Tampa Bay Buccaneers games. I disagree with these officials that it will cause more alcohol related incidents at the games because people are going to drink as much as they want to, it doesn't matter if your drinking Bud Light or a Rum and Coke the number of incidents will not change as a result of the alcohol selction. I think that a much more effective strategy would be to cut off alcohol sales after the third quarter of all football games in order to give people the chance to sober up before they go home.

"Clubs upgrade suite holders' travel to include vacation spots"
Vol.10, Issue 21, Pg.12
This article discusses how NFL teams are now offering extra incentives to the corporations that buy their Luxury Suite Holders. They are beginning to offer full paid, all-inclusive trips to different parts of the world. I think this is a really good marketing strategy. Nowadays its whatelse can you offer me, or why should i choose your company over someone else. These teams are proving that they really care about their customers and are willing to go the extra mile to bring these corporations in and also keep them happy.
I dont see any problems here, these teams have the money to offer extra packages like this and if this is really working, which the article shows it worked in Atlanta, then more power to them. Whoever came up with this idea is probably Director of Marketing now and is on the up and up. I am in huge favor of this idea and wish I had the money to buy a luxury box so i could fly to cabo san lucas in a team jet and party for a week.

This event is so big that fans from 43 different states are going to attend this race at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Hopefully televised championship will also help to develop a fan base for the sport.
This sport can be found on television but not very frequently. It compares to women' soccer and basketball that are on television, but they do not have many viewers.

New Jersey Super Bowl? New Stadium Again Raises Question."
V-10, I-21, P-13
The New York Giants and Jets are constructing an advanced state of the art stadium. These NFL organizations plan to attract attention in order bring the Super Bowl into the area.
I some what agree with the two opposite sides of this situation. Many fans don't want to view and or attempt to host the super bowl and its events in a cold weather city. Mainly because of the pre and post game events would be so hard to hot in cold weather. However, I believe fans deserve to have the chance to attend a super bowl with in the area of their hometown. On the other hand the actual super game should be played in good conditions, the south. Also man NFL teams play in all kids of weather throughout the whole season so why not have an kind of weather for the super bowl as well.
Hosting a super bowl and its pre-post game events in a warmer city would be the obvious choice for fan and business event comforts but also for the players.

"A new jersey super bowl? new stadium" vol. 10 iss. 21 pg. 13
The article discussed the possibility of New York hosting a Super Bowl. The Jets and Giants new stadium is scheduled to open in 2010 with an open roof structure. They both want to host the Super Bowl.
I do not agree with the idea of a northern city hosting the Super Bowl without a dome stadium. I think it would be interesting to see how it would fare in New York City but I feel you are taking to big a risk by counting on the weather to be nice. People with tickets are going to attend the game regardless but you wouldn't get as many tourists if the weather didn't cooperate. The Super Bowl is often seen as a vacation for many and a place to relax. The majority of the country is experiencing cold temperatures during the first week of February and they want to get away for a week. Millions of dollars are made through tourists making a vacation out of it and I don't think it would be as big a success as it currently is in cities such as Miami and Phoenix.

V-10, I-20, pg 13
The article I chose to write about was called “Bottled up: Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales at Bucs games.” It pretty much talked about how the officials of Tampa are refusing to allow hard liquor sales during the Tampa Bay Buccaneer games. I really don’t think that this will make a difference if they do this. They are trying to say that the number of incidents will change if they do this but I truly don’t believe it. People will continue to drink as much alcohol as they want no matter what type of alcohol it is whether it’s liquor or beer. I really don’t think this will change anything. By cutting off the liquor people will drink it in the parking lot or even drink more beer. I don’t think anything will change. I think they should continue to go by the rule if they person seems very intoxicated they should cut them off and not serve them anything alcohol.

Many people are very interested in high school football and now they will have the opportunity to watch it on ESPN. They always telecast college football now they are giving high school football a chance. This will give football players a time to shine on the most watched sports channel. This will also give college coaches an opportunity to see some future college prospects. I feel this is a great opportunity to give high school football teams a chance to shine on TV. It’s a once in a lifetime experience for many players.

Vol. 10, Issue 21, page 4
This article discusses the fact that the big Ten network is not the only fox owned tv network that time warner is working for in Ohio. the MSO has not had a contract for a few months and fox is trying to tie Big Ten Network carriage with an extension from with an extension with theRSN, according to fox and time warner. The companies have exchanged proposals but souces say that are still very far apart. the article discusses that it is very important that the Big Ten Network is even envolved in the these negotiations because it shows that they are atleast talking about the network. It is still a far way of of the country's biggest MSO which is comcast, which has not done any kind of nagotiotions with the big Ten network at all. Fox is trying to gt $2 per subscriber the FSN Ohio, which has the rights to the cleveland Cavs and the Columbous Blue Jackets.
To me I don't see the differance between who has the rights to the networks. As a fan I Just would want to be able to watch it and have to pay the least for it as possible. As the Network I could see why a network would want the rights to the Big Ten network because it could be a netowrk that alot of peo[ple are going to watch expecually in the Ohio area where Ohio State is in the big Ten.

At the end of the summer sales season the NBA is on track for its fifth season of record attendance in a row. Full-season-ticket sales are up 40 percent and the season-ticket renewal rate is at a record 80 percent. One third of the NBA teams have reached the 10,000 full-season-ticket sales mark a new record and it is estimated that 13 or 14 teams will reach that mark by the time the season opens. Of the 10 teams that have eclipsed the 10,000 mark Utah had the biggest increase already selling more than 5000 new full season plans.
The increase in sales is great for the NBA as a whole and for the individual teams. Some teams have added new strategies and plans for selling more tickets including holiday packages and discounted tickets. This allows more people to buy tickets and partial-season-ticket holders to buy full-season-ticket packages. Another thing that helped sell more tickets was the ease of purchasing them on the Web and teams beginning the renewal process earlier. All the new ideas are great for the growth and promotion of the league.

"Bottled up: Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales at Bucs games"
V-10, I-20, pg 13
In this article, it is clear that the Tampa officials are concerned with the amount of liquor fans drink that the games. The officials believe that if they cut off the liquor supply completely in the stadium that less incidents will happen. Truthfully, if fans are going to want to drink liquor they will find a way to do it. People will still booze up in the parking lot and drink whatever they want before they come in the stadium. Also, with beer still being available, people will get drunk no matter if there is liquor available or not. I do agree with the author and officials there is a possibility less incidents will occur because now hard liquor won’t be as easy to come by. Although, if people want it bad enough, they’ll find a way to drink it. Do I think they should pass this new rule? I don’t think it will make much difference. On the other hand, it would be smart to pass a rule after a certain quarter they cut off liquor drinks so people can sober up. With alcohol being so popular to drink at athletic events, I can see fans getting angry at this new rule.

"Breeders' Cup picks Land as first CMO"
v10,I-23, pg5
This article discusses how the Breeder's Cup has named Peter Land their chief marketing officer. He will be the first chief that Greg Avioli has hired for the job of a marketing officer. Lands first oder of business is to evaluate horse racing's championship event to a major happening on the sports and entertainment. Land has been in this business before as a marketing and public relations.
Land in now going to be in charge of traditional marketing and advertising, public relations, television, lisensing and merchandising. Avioli has said that they believe he is going to make great success for the Breeder's cup. What Land sees for the Breeder's cup is that instead of it being only one day would like to turn the whole into too days. As of the race for 2008 they plan to make the whole celiabration two days long to get more people excited and involved with the Breeders Cup.
After reading this article I believe it was a correct move to hire Lands as the marketing guy for the Breeders Cup. I do also think the idea of making the Breeder's Cup two days will bring mokre people into betting on the horses. People might also might buy things from this event and enjoy the racing world.

"Indians execs rethink the jake for a new era" vol 10 issue 23 pg 7
The cleveland indians are trying to get back to the days when they sold out for 6 years straight So after the season they are going to make renovations to make the ballpark more fan friendly. They are going to take out acouple of section in right in put in an outdoor party deck, and also replace the current picnic area with a bigger play area for the kids. They will also convert some of the suites to single boxes. All of this to try to get a younger fan base and more people at the ballpark.
I think that these changes will bring people to the ballpark because im sure people will want to see these renovations first hand, just like they do when a new stadium opens. So it will definately increase initially but hopefully once they see how much better it is they will come back.I think that is the organizations goal.

"NHL Set to Roll Out U.S. Network"
[week 5] Vol-10 I-23 Pg. 01
I think that the NHL's U.S. network will have no more success for the NHL than their current deals. The reason I feel this way is because of the limited success of their deal with the Versus network. Although the NHL does get cable viewership via the Versus network not every cable subscriber gets the Versus network, and not every cable subscriber gets special teirs. There is only limited benefits to the current NHL TV contracts. The NHL does get TV exposure, and did receive $70M from the Versus network.
Where I do believe this will help is when the NHL negotiates a deal with ESPN. I think that the U.S. network would be a great supplement to widely available coverage, but it is not enough for stand alone tv coverage.

"Bottled up: Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales at Bucs games"
V-10, I-20, pg 13
The officials of the NFL team Tampa bay Buccaneers feel that there is to much alcohol consumption at there games. During the games the fans get drunk and they end up getting into physical confutations with other fans and the officials feel that if they make the stadium alcohol free that there will be less fights going happening. I think that this is a good idea, most of the fans that go to games like to pre-game and during that time alone there is probably enough alcohol being consumed that it would hold them throughout the entire game. Also everyone knows that alcohol is something that gets people into violent moods, and football games are not a place you want to have fights, a football game is a place fans like to go and enjoy watching his/her favorite team play and to have a good time. I think that passing the new rule would be a good thing for the franchise if fans want to drink they can come down early and do it outside of the stadium before the game.

“Big South, Crocs do deal for championships”
The Big South, a Division I conference of nine schools in Virginia and the Carolinas, signed a one-year deal with Crocs Inc. a shoe and apparel company, to wear their products at the league’s championship events. This is Crocs’ first conference sponsorship. They will be producing hooded sweatshirts exclusively for the teams participating in the Big South conference championships. Crocs will provide over 3000 gifts for the student-athletes at the championship events.
I think this was a good move by Crocs. Most championships are played on national TV so this will help them promote their apparel. They are trying to expand their market to reach both adults and kids. The coupon offers and samples will also generate more business because people are more likely to buy a product when it is on sale.

The cleveland indians are trying to get back to the i guess you could say the good old days when they sold out for 6 years straight So after the season they are going to do some thoughtful renovations to make the ballpark more fan friendly. They are going to take out acouple of section in right in put in an outdoor party deck, and also replace the current picnic area with a bigger play area for the kids. They will also convert some of the suites to single boxes. All of this to try to get a younger fan base and more people at the ballpark. They feel that this is the way to go with the future always looking upon the younger generation as the propeler of the future.
I think that these changes will bring people to the ballpark because im sure people will want to see these renovations first hand, just like they do when a new stadium opens. So it will definately increase initially but hopefully once they see how much better it is they will come back.I think that is the organizations goal. However, hopefully with these renovations it does keep people coming back constantly and that after the "new" feeling dies down hopefully the crowd doesn't die down as the feeling wears off. I guess only the future can tell with this one.

bottled Up: Tampa keeps limit on liquor sales at buccaneers game.
there is too much drinking at the Tampa Buccaneers football games says the refs and other personnel of the bucs. they say that fans are getting to drunk and start fights at the game with other fans. they also say that its getting ridiculous how the fans act and hold themselves as individuals, so they are going to put a stop to that. I have mixed feelings about this because the fans that drink and are just there to watch the game, those are the people that enjoy the atmosphere, but those who take advantage of it and get belligerent those are the people that ruin it for everyone. so when you think of it that way its a good thing. if they can come up with a system such as a bracelet and when you get a drink they punch it and you are only allowed to have so many then maybe they could do that so the people that want a drink to watch the game they can be happy to.

NHL set to roll out US network
The NHL is finally bringing the NHL Network to the US television market. As a hockey fan, this is a dream come true. They play endless vintage games and have programs analyzing the leagues current on-goings, which is any hockey fans dream. I know I will be glued to the television all day once NHL Network arrives.
I feel this is great for the NHL because it is just another opportunity for the NHL to gain exposure, especially if the NHL Network is packaged with the NFL Network. People who buy the package to get NFL network might accidentally stumble across some hockey highlights that catch their interest. Having the NHL Network in the US can only help as it is a station that is dedicated to a sport that receives very little nation coverage today.
Another feature that will help greatly is decision to have most of the networks programs available on demand. The easier the access, the better, and it can only help the NHL.

"Nats may open ballpark without naming deal"
V-10, I-23, pg 1
The Washington Nationals are building a stadium to replace the delapidated RFK Stadium, but the $611 million facility is over budget and without naming rights. It has become obvious to Mark Lerner, Nationals principal owner, that they will not sell the naming rights before opening day 2008. This is not as bad as you might think because he has chosen to wait for the right deal rather than the quickest deal. In the interim the facility will be known as Nationals Park. Another concern is that the facility is already $60 million over budget and that means more money out of the owner's pocket and less money to sign key free agents to improve the franchise and put fans in the seats.

"Crosby's RBK deal expands to hockey sticks"
Vol. 10 issue 18 pg.9
Sidney Crosby's deal with Sherwood brand sticks has recently ran out, this is a deal he did when he was only 16. Now RBK is stepping in to get more promotion out of Sidney. He was getting paid $150,00/year with his old deal, he will now get over $500,000/year with RBK deal. I think that this is a smart move by suring up Sidney for everything they can, because he is the biggest and youngest star in a re-growing NHL. I would lock him up at no cost.

Vol. 10, Issue 23, pg 1
The Washington Natonials are in need of a new stadium. With plans to rebuild exceeding budget, they wait to sign a deal for naming rights to the new stadium. With the owner spending the cash on the stadium, it leaves potential growth of the team unavailable.
Being at the Nats stadium last year, i agree they need a new top design stadium. Being loacated in DC, where the market is booming, I believe they will find someone to fund the field and its naming rights. The owner is doing the right thing by holding out and not accepting offers below their needs.

"Nats may open ballpark without naming deal"
The Washington Nationals are building a brand new stadium to replace the rundown RFK Stadium. Funny thing is that they dont have a nameing right to it yet! The owner is over budget on. They probably will not have a name on the stadium before opening day of 2008. The owner of the Nationals Mark Lerner doesnt seem to worried about getting a name right either. He is in no hurry and seems like hes waiting for a real good deal maybe to help himself to get a better deal so he doesnt have to take money out of his own pocket. I think this is somewhat crazy. The first thing you do when building a new stadium is to get funding and naming rights so you can organize a budget and how to pay for it. This might hurt the nationals in spending money for free agents if Mr Lerner has to pay some money out of his new pocket. And the nationals need help on the field another near the bottom of the MLB standings doesnt put people in the stadiums. Must spend money on free agents and get naming rights soon!

The Washington Nationals, who are supposed to open a new ball park next season are still without a deal that will name their new home. The Ball park will be ready for opening day in 2008. Team officials say it is important to get the right deal, than to get one quicker.
Officials aren't worried that they dont have a deal yet. There have been a number of new facilities that do not have ming deal as of right now. The New York Mets inked a deal for a 20 year $400 million deal for their new stadium.
I agree with the statemtent that it is important to get the right deal than to rush into a deal that woul be the wrong one. Naming rights bring in a great amount of revenue for the team and help defrey the cost of building a new stadium

"Camo Deal Adds to NASCAR's Reach"
Vol. 10, Issue 23,page 4
Motorsports Authentics has developed a new way to market NASCAR gear. By teaming up with Realtree manufacturer, NASCAR will now be able to sell gear in a camouflage pattern. NASCAR has always distributed camouflage tee shirts and hats, but now they are looking to expand to such products as camping gear, bags, and home décor. After doing research, Motorsports Authentics found that NASCAR fans were more likely to be hunters and fishers. After discovering this, they realized that this target market would be more apt to combine their love of NASCAR and hunting gear and buy products like the ones they will now be distributing.
Being from the country, I could have easily told M.A. that marketing NASCAR through camouflage would increase sales dramatically. It’s very stereotypical, but NASCAR fans are country, blue collar, redneck, hillbilly kinds of people and this category loves camouflage. Granted not all NASCAR fans fall in this category, but the majority do and will enjoy the agreement between M.A. and Realtree.

Vol.10 Iss. 23 Pg. 1
The Washington Nationals are set to open up their new ballpark and they do not have a name for it yet. The Nationals are searching for a corporation to throw their name on the stadium.
I am surprised that with all the money floating around one of the biggest markets in America, that no one has stepped up yet to acquire the naming rights. I wouldn't be worried if I were the Nationals ownership because someone always tends to buy the naming rights just before the opening of the stadium in order to drive down the price. With all these new stadiums opening it will be tough for the Nationals to get the money they expected. However, some company is willing to put their name on that stadium for millions of dollars, it will happen eventually.

Vol. 10, Issue 23, page 4
Motorsports Authentic is currently in the process of new and creative way on how to market NASCAR fans. They have explored the idea and now have teamed up with Realtree manufacturer, to sell various products in a camouflage pattern. It will range from the traditional t-shirts and hats to products that are more abstract; such as camping gear/equipment and home decor.
I believe this is a great marketing tool used by Motorsports Authentics. It has identified its target market and learned that the particular people who are interested in NASCAR are bull-collar outdoors people. Therefore, by creating numerous camouflage products Motorsports Authentics and RealTree manufacturer should benefit from this relationship and their revenue should increase dramatically.

"NHL Set to Roll Out U.S. Network"
[Week 5] V-10, I-23, P-13
To succeed in the professional sports industry, you must secure a large television deal. In many ways the NFL has become what it has because it has received very lucrative tv deals. As the NHL continues to regrow, it would be a great time to get a good tv deal to expose itself to viewers across America.
The U.S. Network is a good idea, but it must make better efforts than Versus did to promote the NHL. It must sell the NHL and its players so it receives better ratings. The more ratings, the more money. The more money, the larger and faster the NHL can grow.
I think it's great the NHL has made the rule changes that it has to increase the excitement and flow of the game. This is why it continues to grow in popularity. It is much more exciting to watch. The league is headed in a great direction and I hope that the U.S. Network is able to help with this process.

NHL Set to Roll Out U.S. Network"
Vol-10 I-23 Pg. 01
The NHL is finally going to have their own network and a national one at that. I think this could be very succesful. Professional hockey is on the up and up and getting this national exposure will only help it more. People all over the continent want to see Sidney Crosby play hockey and now they will be able to. I think the NHL would be more succesful if they could work something out with ESPN because they have great coverage of all sports and would really help out hockey. The Versus Network is currently covering most hockey games, but they just arent doing it the justice it deserves. I think this is a good move for the NHL and I expect things to really start turning around for a new, fast, and upcoming sport.

Nats may open ballpark without a naming deal"
Vol.10 Iss. 23 Pg. 1
The Washington Nationals are looking forward to opening up a new ballpark without a name for it yet. In 2008 they plan on opening the stadium but they still don’t have a name for their new stadium. The team officials don’t feel its necessary to rush into the decision because they want to get the right deal. They feel regardless they will generate income and eventually they will have a name for their new stadium.
I think this is a smart decision for the team. They want to gain the most revenue for the name and you can only do this by waiting for the right deal to come along. Some company will be gladly to take this deal if the opportunity presents itself no matter when it is. They are going to get millions of dollars any way you look at it for a company to put their name in the stadium, so I don’t think it will hurt the team ata ll. I think it’s a good marketing strategy.

V10, I-23, pg 35
The LA Kings and the Anaheim Ducks played in London the last week. The two teams revenues have been low since the lockout. In London, the game was sold out with an attendance of 34,600.
The U.S. is trying to reestablish ties with Europe. They used to play games against Sweedish and Finnish teams, but they have no recently done that. They feel by establishing these ties that they will be able to create more profit.
Therefore, they think it would be essential to gain good ties with Europe. I agree because we want to show other countries that we are friendly, and we can show those countries how to have a good time.

In my opinion what the Washingtonal Nationals are doing is very risky, however; if everything works out right it could end up being a smart decision. They are searching for the highest bidder and when the time has come they will announce the name.

[week 6] "Nationals may open ballpark without a naming deal." V 10 I 23 Pg 1 & 6.
This article is about the Washington Nationals possibly taking over there new $660 Million dollar stadium next spring with out a naming rites deal. The stadium is nearly finished according to the DC Sport & Entertainment Commission. They are expecting the park to be ready by opening day 2008 as it is stated in the contract. The National's are hoping for an $8-$10 million annual revenue from the naming contract. The clubs owner says that they are willing to wait until '09 for the right deal.
I think the Nationals owner may have to compromise and accept a lower deal than he wants. The Nationals are not a great team, they are not a franchise team that you see in the playoffs every year.
It is logical to think you will recieve that type of money for a naming deal because of the huge promotion it gives the company, but honestly how good is it if the fan base is not strong. I think if the wizards pick up there game next season they may see offers close to what they want.

LABOR AND AGENTS
This article talks about Jamarcus Russell the number one over all pick in this past years NFL draft. It speaks of his lengthy 48 day holdout which was the longest of any number one pick in 20 years. The contract is worth over 60 million dollars, but the article mainly speaks about how Russell's mother and himself were contacted frequentely throughout the holdout by other agencies who felt they could get him signed in no time. Russells agents began to worry at times that he would leave for another company. However they did some very smart things to keep him on there side that are directly related to business in sports. The agency held weekly meetings to keep him updated on where they stood on talks with the raiders and how close they were to signing. Eventually the deal got done, of course Russell was criticized for being greedy but most people would not understand unless put in that position. In the end Russell's mother said if they had to do it again they would not have changed a thing "It was worth the Wait".

Miaimi to tear down Historic Orange Bowl Vol 10 iss.19 pg 7
The article I chose was about a decision that was made to tear down the Orange Bowl in Miami. This is the home of the Miami Hurricanes also known as the U. This is also the home of FIU. I can't see why this would effect Miami University because they moved all their games to Dolphin Staduim. Their have be historic games played in this staduim as well as some super bowl games.
I think that if the staduim is out dated it needs to be torn down. I understand that tearing down this staduim lots of memories of some the greatest NFL players who played at Miami would be gone. So I would say that I agree with tearing the staduim down let Miami share there staduim like we do in PGH. Hahah

The nameless Nationals.
The Washington Nationals and fans have been very excited about their new stadium that should be opening up next year. This over 600 million dollar project has been the pride of this ball club for the past couple of average seasons. There is just one problem. They are having trouble finding a bidder to throw up the money and take naming rights.

The Washington Nationals have recently opened a new ball park even though they don’t have a name for the stadium yet. The officials believe that they should wait for the right deal gain as much revenue as they can before deciding a name.
I don’t think this will hurt their revenue at all because they are going to make money either way. Buying some time instead of rushing to pick a name won’t hurt the stadium that much. I think that their marketing strategy is to wait and see what the best deal will be. At any point, a company will be glad to take the deal, so I don’t think buying their time to pick a name will hurt them at all.

The Washington Nationals will open a new ballpark next season. The problem is,that they don't have a name or a sponsor for the naming rights. Negotiations are going on, but the organization is saying that it is important to take the right deal, rather than the quick deal.
The organization is being patient because they want the best deal. I think that this is the right move, although it could backfire on them. If they wait, they could land a big deal, but they could also not land a big deal and end up settling for just anything. If they take a quick deal now, they could get money and everything would be situated, but they could also miss out on a bigger deal later to come. Either way, they must choose something. The new ballpark will open in 2008. The question is, will it have a name?

This article discusses that the Washington Nationals may open their ballpark with no naming. The Nationals almost had a deal with Wasserman Media Group but the deal eventually fell through. If the nationals reach their target price of 8-10 million it would be the second in MLB naming history.
Despite the anonymous stadium, the Nationals are planning to wait until 09' in order to get the largest revenue. The Nationals are however seeking a deal now with Philips Electronics. Although this is a shock to alot of sports enthusiasts, this is not a first time occurence. Other teams and parks that have done this before include FedEx Field but later turned it around and made large profits from the holdout.

I don't think it's that big of a deal that they haven't sold the naming rights yet. Eventually they will sell the rights to whoever the highest bidder is and will get their money anyways. Even if they wait until later in the season to sell their naming rights the deal will just last that much longer and they won't lose any money in the long run.

"League Signs Scotiabank to deal totaling $50M
Vol. 10, Issue 23, Page 1 and 35
Andrew VanHorn
This article written by staff writer Terry Lefton talks about Scotiabank signing the biggest deal since the 2004-05 lockout for the NHL. The deal totaling over 50 million in rights fees to make Scotiabank the "official bank of the NHL". Scotiabank is Canada's third biggest bank and will get the rights to issue NHL affinity cards. They are reportingly paying $6 million a year in rights fees, which doubles that of any sponsorship for the NHL to date. The bank plans to build a marketing platform from the NHL deal similer as Bank of America has with MLB. The bank already does have ties to the bank they have the naming rights to the Ottawa Senetors arena. In summation the bank is going to try to use Scotia bank to market its product and in they as a bank want to be apart of wah tthe NHL is doing. The NHL is also going after several other sponsors, such as Insurance, electronics and other big companies.
I think this is a great thing for the sports of hockey and for the bank as a whole. I think that the NHL is trying to make a huge comeback after the big lockout in 2004-05. They need to get some big sponsors to do that, and this bank being one of the bigger ones in canada is a good step in doing that. I also think that this will help the bank to market there product to a more diverse fan group and will probably be able to get some more business as a result of it. I personally hope that the NHL does get more of a fan base beccause I am a big NHL fan and I don't want to see the league lose what they have. I would like to see it grow into one of the 4 big sports in America again, and I think that sponsorships like the Crotiabank will help the NHL go in that direction.

The Washington Nationals MLB team is set to open their new stadium in 2008; however, the stadium's naming rights have not been disclosed as of this date. The naming rights of a stadium in today's expensive sport marketing industry is not just a one step process and this provides a substantial amount of income to the organization. I don't feel the Nationals should rush into this decision because it could ultimately cost them millions of dollars for their ballclub. On the other hand, I don't feel the organization should drag this process out too far into the season because it would show the fans and media that the Nationals organization may be having some administrative/marketing troubles.

The article I chose to write about was called “Miami to tear down Historic Orange Bowl.” It was pretty much about how the Orange Bowl in Miami was going to be torn down. The Miami Hurricanes think of this field as their home along with the school FIU. Many games that will go down in history have been played on this field such as super bowl games along with many other memorable games that people will never forget. I think they need to tear it down because today everyone is renovating and coming up with new ways to better stadiums and I think it’s time for Miami to do the same. I understand they have many memories but they can make new memories on their new field that will hopefully benefit them in the end. They will have a better environment along with a better field for the teams. It will also make it more enjoyable for the fans in my opinion.

“Scotiabank” to deal totaling $50M
Vol. 10, Iss. 23, Pg. 35
The artcile I have chosen to review is about the recent league signing deal of Scotiabank totaling over 50 million in rights fees. This deal will make Scotiabank the “Official bank” of the NHL and hopefully the head bank for finnacial transactions of hockey fans everywhere. It has been reported that the canadian bank will be paying $6 million a year in rights fees. The banking system Bank of America has been a sort of inspiration for the canadian bank due to its strong connection with MLB. Overall, this is a great marekting plan for the bank and will turn out to be a success. The NHL is also going after many other sponsors such as; insurance firms, electronic companies many other big name product companies.
I believe this is an overall great idea, not only for the NHL and Scotiabank but for hockey fans as well. This gives Scotiabank an opportunity to reach out to a large base of people and potentially increase their business.

"MLB soaks up another attendance record"
v-10, I-24, p.6
This article is about how the baseball fans have grown over the past year. The attendance for this year was a total of 79.9 million, 4.5 percent ahead of last year and was 18 percent ahead of the league total from just five years ago. It was said that the marketing people of the league are not thinking that the sales will be as great as they were this year.
It said that twenty-three of the 30 clubs had an increase in there attendance and was up 20 from last year. Some of these big teams that had an increase were New York clubs,St. Louis, Detroit, the Los Angeles Dodgers and couple others were setting new franchise attendance records.
I see this as a good thing for the MLB. As my knowing I know that I went to couple games this year and friend and family went to some games and it just seemed that many people were more into the baseball this year. I think this is good because it helps with their marketing department with getting people to buy things with the teams on them.

The nfl is cracking down on equipment and apparel violations. They have been fining players for the smallets equipment flaws such as different tape color, wrong wrist band color, pants being too short, and also for having there jersey too small. The nfl is even starting to fine equipment managers for an undisclosed amount of money but the players are getting fined up to 20,000 dollars.
I think that the nfl is doing a very good thing the players always think they can get away with everything and they go so far just so they can stand out. I think this is a very good message being sent to the players from the nfl. If the players want too try to stand out they will just end up suffering the consequences, and i dontthink that the nfl go's alittle over board because are made for a reason and shouldn't be violated.

[Week 7] "Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'"
V-10 I-24 P-5
The NFL commissioner is cracking down on equipment and uniform violations this season. Players are being fined $5000 for the first offense and $10,000 for a repeat offense. Some players have been fined up to $20,000. Club equipment managers and athletics trainers may also be fined if players from their teams wear equipment that doesn’t abide by the NFL rules. The list of violations includes wearing jerseys that are too small to cover the shoulder pads and other equipment, wearing sleeves of improper length, and wearing chin straps, gloves or wrist bands of the wrong color. Two of the biggest issues this season have been wearing athletic tape that isn’t white and wearing “What Would Jesus Do?” and “Live Strong” bracelets.
I agree that this whole campaign is out of hand. Who cares what color wrist bands and athletic tape the players wear. The athletes are just showing team spirit by wearing their team colors. As for the bracelets, that issue is just insane. The bracelets help define the athletes, they say this is who I am and this is what I believe in. No one has the right to take that freedom away from anyone. Beside the more unique the athlete is the more marketable he becomes.

(Week 7)"Upshaw:Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'"
Vol.10, Issue 24, Page 5
The NFL is cracking down on the uniforms and appearances of the players. Most believe this goes back to how Commissioner Goodell is cracking down on the NFL in general and his concern for the "appearance" of the NFL. They are even going as far as to fine players for not wearing the correct color tape on their hands and arms. Personally, I think this is ridiculous. I think there should be some limitiations on what players can and cannot wear especially when it pertains to safety, but the color of tape on their hands has no effect on the game in general. In fact, I think black tape or team color tape looks much better than the OLD SCHOOL white tape. I think Commissioner Goodell needs to get a little more current because he is living a little too much in the past. Also, the fact that they are now wanting to fine the equipment managers and trainers is ridiculous, how much money is the league trying to draw out of its employees.

"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'"
V-10 I-24 P-5
The reason I chose this article is for the simple fact that this has been an on going battle between the league and the players, but one the players have been losing. The NFL has been implementing new rules for the player to follow every year, but the players want to make their own. The difference between now and then is the price they have to pay in fines. Players are being fined for little things that most fans wouldn’t notice like a small jersey, the wrong color tape, and even wrist band/ bracelets. I think some things like too small of a jersey should be looked at more closely than the wrong color tape, since the small jersey gives a player an advantage but the tape doesn’t. NFL players are being fined up to 20,000 dollars and there not the one getting fines now they are fining the equipment managers as well. Which is out of line in my opinion, what is he going to do when a player like Terrell Owens want to wear blue tape on his wrist or a small jersey. Nothing, he would probably get fired for saying anything to a player of that caliber. This is just the NFL showing everyone who is boss as usual. I believe the NFL is the biggest bullies to their players out of all the professional sports, even more so then the NBA.

"College Programs Keep Passion Alive" (week 7) V-10, I-24,Pg-20
I think that this is great how college teams are trying a new technique to ensure fans stay loyal to their teams. There are only a few colleges that are participating right now, but I think the more successful it is that more college teams will join too.
The colleges are promoting fan packages that usually include a ticket, air fair, hotel, and transportation. However, there are some that include everything but the ticket. Boston College and Texas are the prime colleges that are engaging in this new fan package deals.
I do feel that colleges should do more to ensure their loyalty fan base. This is just one way that colleges seek to keep who they have loyal.

The NFL will be fining players up to $20,000 dollars if they do not abide by the rules that are going to be set dealing with uniforms. If players do not wear the appropriate size jersey that covers their pads and white athletic tape they will be facing a hefty fine.
In some ways I agree and disagree with the NFL. There are athletes now a days who will do anything to stand out which includes the way they wear their uniform. There needs to be rules set and followed through for each and every player in the NFL. In my opinion if you want to stand out wear white tape and the proper jersey size but when you step onto the field be the best player and then you will stand out.

"Target’s Chase Field rebranding hits mark"
Volume 10 – Issue24 : Page 04
The Arizona Diamondbacks vice president of business operations, Tom Garfinkel, decided that he was going to hire Target, a retail store, to rebrand Chase Field. The reason this is such a shock is that Target is a retail, low price store that no one would think is worthy of branding a stadium with its goods.
The Diamondbacks budgets was between 6-7 million dollars but were able to keep the total cost at 3.5 million. After all the renovations took place, the Diamondbacks were able to upgrade and renovate other aspects of the stadium because they had undercut their budget by such a large margin. One of he biggest concerns is that after the renovations were over, they would look cheap and fake. However, with the new renovations, it gave the stadium and new family oriented look that will be able to be updated again in years to come.
The new aesthetics of the stadium falls right into the feeling that the Diamondbacks are trying to create, the family memory feeling. They are trying to target the emotions and memories of young children and adults. Such as the first game with dad, or the first game in general. The big picture is that the Diamondbacks came up with a big enhancement in their budget by going with target and are now going to be able to upgrade their stadium as much as they want

"MLB, Soaks up another Attendance Record"
Vol.10, Iss.24, Pg.6
Brian Urban
The article I have chosen to review is about the growing amount of baseball fans that have been packing in ball parks this past year. It is truly amazing how exposure and coverage of a sport can help the attendence at the stadiums significantly grow. Statistics from this past year’s total of fans that have attended MLB games was a surprisingly high 79.9 million. This was an increase of 4.5 percent from the past year’s attendance record. Also, the 79.9 million recording of fans as a stagering 18 percent higher than that of the of the MLB total from the total amount recorded five years ago. Experts in the MLB marketing field have said that tickets sales/attendance totals will not be as high the next year most likely due to similar past patterns. The attendedance increased throughout the whole MLB. In fact twenty three out of the thirty teams in the MLB had significant increases in ticket sales/fan attendance. Increases in attendeance this wide spread is very impressive for the sport of major league baseball to do.
Overall, this is a great improvement for the popularity and fan recognition for all MLB teams. Clearly the majority of the teams in the MLB have had success with in their marketing departments due to the result of increased ticket sales, fan attendance and grow of fan base. The MLB is finely getting the attendance numbers it so rightfully deserves as America’s past time.

Jets-Giants getting 1 million for top suites:
The New York Jet and Giants get a new stadium in 2010. It is going to be state of the art, and have tons of neat ideas implemented into it. One of the main attractions will be their prime suites. These suites are already selling for 1 million dollars. I think that this is ridiulous, because no mormal person will ever get a chance to experience one of these suites. They were obviously made for high rollers, and they are not worried about the rest of the fans which make up most of the crowd. I understand that they need to make money, but one million dollars is ludicras. There will be 15- 20 suites, so you are looking at 15-20 millions dollars right there, that number is insane. That is just for suites, thats not including the rest of the stadium seating. I just do not agree with how expensive these suite will be.

"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'Out of Hand'"
[week 7] Volume-10 Issue-24 Page-5
I think that some times the NFL goes to far, and this is one of those times. I feel that it is somewhat unreasonable, and goes against the goodwill of players, to fine them for insignificant fines. I can understand players being fined for violations that may increase the chance of injury, like not wearing equipment properly or not wearing some of the players pads. However, to fine a player for the color tape they wear, or for brand of clothing they wear is a bit to much for me. I find it hard to believe that there is some kind of detriment to NFL or the player because they wear a certain color tape, nor do I believe that fans notice or care.
I believe that the NFL only stands to hurt their relationship with the players with these fines, and I would expect that some players would look to challenge the NFL's rules. Players have already looked for ways to bend the NFL's celebration rules, and I feel they will do the same here. The NFL stands to face backlash from the players the same as the NBA faced when they made players adhear to a dress code. I also think that eventually major sport leagues like the NFL and the NBA will challenged by players unions in the courts as to whether these uniform regulations are constitutional.

The article I chose to write about was called “Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL ‘Out of Hand.” It is pretty much about how companies are fining NFL players huge amounts of money if they do not abide by certain rules pertaining to wearing or sporting their uniforms. Some players are being fined up at $20,000. They are being fined if they do not wear the correct size jersey to cover their pads. I think that is ridiculous. These companies should be thankful that they even have these athletes wearing their product. Yes, I know the players are getting paid a ridiculous amount to sport the company’s jersey but I think these companies need to back off and let the players wear the jerseys as they like. The players are the one playing in the game so they should be able to wear their own jersey the way they want without anyone saying anything. I think $20,000 is ridiculous to charge a player if they don’t have the right size jersey on. I think that amount is insane to charge a player.

[week 7] Volume-10 Issue-24 Page-5
The National Football League is setting some strict rules on the uniform policy. Many players have been fined large amounts of money for wearing the wrong kind of sock or wearing the wrong color tape. Some fines have been up to 20,000 dollars for such a petty thing as this.
I think this is outrageous, the NFL is thee biggest money maker when it comes to professional leagues, and for them to be fining players for a petty thing like the wrong color tape or wearing low socks when they were suppose to wear high socks. I think this should not happen, I can see if someone didn’t wear a protective pad that is always supposed to be worn and being fined for that but not something like socks.

"Red Sox Travel unit a big hit with fans"
The Boston Red Sox have added a new traveling fan arm. What they have done is made traveling with the team seem like a dream vacation. The Red Sox Destination travel group offers incredible packages for Sex fans while traveling to away games with the team. Fan are given private tours of stadiums, team replica team apparel, private meeting with players and much more. Fans say that although the packages can be expensive they are well worth the cost.
This is a great way to produce additional revenue for the team. These packages seem to be like a dream vacation for some. Meeting with players, touring stadiums what baseball fan wouldn't want to do all those things. The article states that the group has added games each season and plans to continue to do so in the future. This is a great way for a solid team to bring fans with them, keep relations up with the fans by offering the packages and possibly attract new fans who are curious and may purchase a package. However, I would not recommend this to every MLB team. The Red Sox are having success because they are a top team in the league every year, I do not think it would be financially beneficial to a team that does mediocre at best each year.

One main attribute that will be popular is the new suites. These suites are currently selling for 1 million dollars. I think that this is a good idea and it will make money regardless. Even though the prices are going to be much higher the high rollers will still buy these suite tickets. They are building them for popular and rich people and no normal person will have the experience to be in this luxury. Regular fans are not worried about these seats, they watch the game in the same arena and they are satisfied with their seats and tickets. Money is what it is all about and this is a good idea. They can take a chance and most likely they will succeed. There will be 15- 20 suites, so that’s 15-20 millions dollars right away. That is just for suites, that’s not including the rest of the stadium seating. This is a risk but with the money they have its worth a try.

"Upshaw: Apparel Fines From NFL 'Out of Hand'"
[Week 7] V-10, I-24, P-5
The NFL has set rules for the athletes to abide by. If the athlete is going to break the rules and wear something else, then they should be fined. While I do think that some of these rules are petty, they are still rules and the athletes know these rules and should adhere to them. You wouldn't go to work without following your dress code. So why should they be able to? You must remember that this is not a game anymore. It's a business.
If they do continue to punish players for wearing something that they should not, they need to stay consistent. They need to make sure that ALL players are wearing what they should be.

Volume-10 Issue-24 Page-5
This article is about NFL cracking down on players for not following league rules. The fines could be as much as $20,000. The concern is how the players look their appearance on the game field. If the game jersey is too big and doesn’t cover the equipment they will be fined. Fines can result if players don’t wear the correct color tape also.
I think this is very dumb because the commissioner of the NFL to me isn’t really worried about the game of football. Worrying about tape that a player wears during the game I think is dumb. I can understand covering up equipment so that people don’t get hurt but tape what the tape has to do with playing football. I think there are far more serious issues dealing with the sport than the color of tape that’s worn on game day

"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'Out of Hand'"

The NFL will be fining players up to $20,000 dollars if they do not follow the rules that deal with uniform conformity. If players do not wear appropriate jersey sizes, and wear the pads they are supposed to wear, they will be fined. White athletic tape is the biggest problem, because players like to wear tape color of there teams and different color tape is often used.
The NFL or “No Fun League,” has really showed its true colors with this one. Although this has been a topic of debate for years now, the fact that it has come up again is border line ridiculous. As a player, you want to look good, if you look and feel good, then you’ll play good. As the league would have it they would want everyone to look the same, but everyone is different so therefore they should be able to look different. Plus what they wear barring that it isn’t offensive to anyone, doesn’t make the slightest bit of difference to fans or spectators of the game. The only people that I can see that should have a problem with this, are the sponsors. Other than that there really shouldn’t be an issue, the NFL has gone to far with this one.

week7-Upshaw Apparel fines from NFL "out of hand" volume 10 Issue 24 page 5
The NFL is cracking down on how players look on the game field. there is a certain set of rules that the players need to follow when it comes to the uniform. you must wear the right size jersey the equipment that you wear needs to be covered, there is even a restriction on the tape that the players wear or there could be fines the max. fine could total 20,000 dollars.
I think that the NFL is taking it to far I could agree that you want your team to mesh well eith each other but there needs to be individuality out there on the field. and you are really going to fine some one if they dont use the right tape now come on. i feel that the NFL needs to look into not making strict rules about a dress code and start making strict rules on the behavior side of how athletes present themselves on and off the field.

Local experience to figure heavily in Pittsburgh arena project
The Penguins have hired Pittsburgh based PJ-Dick to team with Hunt Construction to help build the Penguins new arena. They are also working with Chris Haupt, who was in charge of planning the building of PNC Park, which is one of the nicest baseball stadiums in the world.
I feel that it is important the Penguins have so many different people working together on the project of planning their new arena, as they want it to be as good to them as PNC Park and Heinz Field have been for the Pirates and Steelers. If the venues are nice, it will bring in some more people that normally wouldn’t attend games at the outdated Mellon Arena, due to its lack of accommodations (lack of suites, food, etc.) This arena is very valuable to the city, because unlike the football and baseball stadiums, the Penguins arena will host many other events, such as shows and concerts.

[week 7] V-10 I-24 P-5
The reason I chose this article is because situations like this has been an on going battle between the league and the players, but the players can not seem to win any of the battles. The NFL has been implementing new rules for the player to follow every year, but the players want to make their own. Players are being fined for little things that most fans wouldn’t notice like a small jersey, the wrong color tape, and even wrist band/ bracelets. NFL players are being fined up to 20,000 dollars and there not the one getting fines now they are fining the equipment managers as well. This is just the NFL showing everyone that no one is more important than anyone else in the league.

There are athletes who will do anything to stand out which includes the way they wear their uniform and all of the extra wristbands. [Week 7]"Triathlons: In it for long run"
V-10, I-24, pg 1
This article discussess the growing popularity of triathlons. In 1999, membership in the USA Triathlon was 19,000, while today it's more than 100,000. There have also been increases in number of participants and subscribers to Triathlete magazine.
In the article we also learn about the history of the triathlon. It has traces back to France in the 1920's, but appeared in the US in 1974. A US Navy Commander was having a debate about who the better athletes were; swimmers cyclists, or runners. He proposed a race in which athletes would swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles. The winner of this event would be known as the Ironman. The article then begins discussing the marketing of the trade mark and how the popularity increase. An ophthalmologist ended up purchasing the the Ironman, and created the World Triathlon Corporation.
I have an enormous amount of respect for anyone who competes in a triathlon let alone and Ironman race. I have a room mate and a good friend that both compete in these races and the dedication they have is unbelievable. I was surprized to read that James Gill bought the Ironman for only $3 million. Granted it is not as popular as football or basketball, but I believe it is going to continue to grow in the future; especially when people realize how incredible the feat of competing in one of these races actually is.

V-10, I-24, pg 5
This article discusses the fact that the NFL is cracjing down on uniform and equipment violations. They have gone as far as to say that equipment managers and trainers will be fined if they aid a player in commiting a uniform violation. Some examples of uniform violations sent in a memo from NFL director of football operations Merton Hanks to all NFL head coaches are: not competely buckling the chin strap, which must be completely white, wearing gloves that have a color scheme that contrasts or defaces the NFL logo, wearing jerseys that are too small to cover the shoulder pads, wearing sleaves at the wrong length, wearing a non league approved eye shield, wearing pants that don't cover the knees, wearing wrist bands that aren't black or white, wering arm of wrist tape that isn't white, and wearing uncovered LiveStrong style bracelets. Personally, I think that Roger Goodell is turing into a dictator, I agree with alot of the items of his new personal conduct policy but I think it is ridiculous to fine equipment managers and trainers who aren't well paid as it is.

"Dolphins going back to market with stadium naming rights"
week 7, vol. 10 iss. 24 pg. 12
Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga has decided to once again sell the naming rights to what is now known as Dolphin Stadium. In the 20 years of the stadium it has had five different names. That is an average name change every four years.
I think it's a good idea for the Dolphins to sell the naming rights to their stadium once again. Since the Miami Hurricanes will be playing in their stadium they would need to change the name anyways to help recruiting purposes for the university. Since they will already be needing to change it, it only makes sense to sell the name again to get some revenue for the Dolphins as well as the Hurricanes which it is reported will split the revenue from the naming rights. Although it has been hard to work with Wayne Huizenga in purchasing the naming rights because of him backing out at the last minute, a sponsor will still put up the money to have their name put on the stadium.

Dolphins going back to market with stadium naming rights"
The Miami dolphins owner is now in the process of selling the naming rights to the stadium. This is the 5th time he has had a name changed to the stadium and I think its a good idea for him to do it now. Because the Miami Hurricanes will also be playing in that stadium and might market some more attractive Sponsors that your having your name on 2 Highly Marketed Teams. But they will reportedly split the revenue on the naming rights. So i think its good timing to get a name instead of DOLPHINS STADIUM... even though Wayne Huizenga has done this numerous times. But you must put a good team on the field and Miami Dolphins and Hurricanes havent been doing that as of late so that might hurt the MArket too.

"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand.'" Volume 10 Issue 24. Page 5
The executive director of the NFL players association, Gene Upshaw says the NFL's fining of players who are not wearing approved apparel on the playing field is getting out of hand. Players in the NFL are being fied for things such as wearing the wrong color tape on their wrists, or wearing sleeves that are of improper length, or not coverng bracelets such as the Lance Armstong "Live Strong" band.
It is understandable why players in the NFL should look alike somewhat but there should be more empathy when it comes to things such as bracelets supporting cancer patients, and religious beliefs. The NFL apparel codes should allow things such as these so their players can express themselves in a way that is not harmful to the league.

"Can a new league tap into old passions?"
V-10 issue 22 pg1,pg63
The article discusses the formation of a new football league, called the All-American Football League. The premise is that it will tap into college football fans by holding most games at college football stadiums such as the Ben Hill Griffin stadium at the University of Florida. The league will also feature teams made up of many players from the schools that host teams. Although many teams will have players from all over the country the first emphasis is to get players from the host schools to draw attention to the games. One of the criteria to play in the league that is different than the NFL and Arena Football league is that players must have a college degree. The president and main investor of the league knows that he has an uphill battle considering the outcome of other leagues like the USFL and XFL but is willing to give it a shot.
I feel that this league will not workout at all. The owner of the league is hoping that fans will be glad to come to the games to see what there favorite players from college are doing but I don't think college fans care about the players, they care about the teams and the tradition that many of these college institutions have. One reason why these start up leagues haven't worked is because its giving the same product as the NFL who wants to watch less talented players do the same thing that they can see in the NFL. One of the reasons the AFL is becoming popular and exciting is because it is different the rules are different the field is different and they offer a different product. The game is more offense minded in the AFL thats why you see scores of 72-58 on a regular basis. I think until a football league can give spectators a different product than what is already out there then they are just going to continue to fold.

"College Programs Keep Passion Alive"
This article is about Universities setting up programs to transport fans to away games. Some Universities like Boston College have just begun to put VIP packages together that include hotel stays, campus tours, pregame activities and some other gifts. Boston College is a smaller university compared to some division one competition. If the ventures reach 75 people they will break even but some find these VIP trips expensive as they can be almost three thousand for a years worth. Schools like Texas having been putting packages like this together for sometime as they take a few hundred fans to every game. For a closer drive like their annual game versus Oklahoma students and alum can ride there and back for only 65 dollars of course this doesnt include the ticket price. The last two years they were at the rose bowl they took eleven hundred people to the game. The article discusses how much money is in travel and how certain companies like New England Ventures are specializing in Sports travel. Another Group RazorGator Interactive which doesn't follow any one school or team but has Marketing Partners which range from Yahoo and Fox sports to the Philadelphia Eagles offers transportation and packages to a lot of different events that are located at the bottom of the article. Schools tend to make less off road games than these groups who get the wealthier alum and specialize in what they do. But either way there is money to be made in the travel business. Of course these travel packages are not just limited to football, lots of schools and organizations offer different travel arrangements for a variety of different sports and events.

"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'"
[Week 7] V-10 I-24 P-5
The NFL commissioner is making equipment and uniform violations this season a major financial issue. Players are being fined $5000 for the first offense and $10,000 for a repeat offense. Some players have been fined up to $20,000. I know it does not sound like that much money for some of the elite players in the NFL, but 10,000 dollars is still 10,000 dollars. If players do not wear the appropriate size jersey that covers their pads and white athletic tape, they will be facing a various fines from the league.
I find this article very disturbing, because I believe the NFL is taking the dress code violations way to serious. Yes, I agree with how there has to be some rules and how the NFL dress code needs to be professional, but only white athletic tape just sounds crazy. The NFL is taking away from any individualism and I think that will hurt the promotion of some popular players and various styles that go along with the game. There are greater issues going on in the NFL than what color tape or if a players socks are up during game day.

(Week 7)Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'Out of Hand'"
Volume-10 Issue-24 Page-5
The article I chose to write about is called “Apparel fines from NFL 'Out of Hand'". The article is about the NFL cracking down on the color of tape the professional athletes use during a game. The NFL will be fining players up to $20,000 dollars if they do not follow the rules that deal with uniform conformity. The article established that white tape is the biggest problem now with the uniform rules. They want the players to wear exactly what their uniform colors are and different color tape is often used. The players will be fined if they do not wear appropriate jersey sizes, and wear the pads they are supposed to wear.
I think that the NFL is cracking down a little too much on things that really don’t make a difference on the field. Just because you’re a professional doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be able to have little things different that others. I think the NFL is making their rules too strict, especially over how you look on the field. The NFL should pay more attention to other things that are much bigger deal.

[Week 7]"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'" V-10 I-24 P-5
This article talks about the NFL cracking down on uniform violations, specifically issues involving the color tape a player uses. Many players use their teams color of tape, and the NFL wants players only using white tape. Also talked about was the wear of correct jersey size and proper equipment. Some players have been fined $20,000 for violation of these rules.
I feel there is a fine line between enforcing league policy and taking the issue too far. Obviously, if there were no rules or regulations players would feel the need to cross the line between appropriate and inappropriate. However, there is also a fine line between taking the issue of what color tape players are using and threatening with fines in excess of $10,000.

"MLB Soaks up another attendance record"
Andrew VanHorn
This article discusses the fact that Major League Baseball recorded a attendance record this past season. The average attendance throughout the 32 major league parks was 32,785 and a total of 79.5 million attendance which is 4.5 percent up from last season and remarkably up 18 percent from just ten seasons ago. Eight teams broke attendance records for there stadiums and 23 gained on attendance this season.
This is an amazing growth for baseball in my opinion considering the fact that the league is still in a steroid battle. This could only be a good thing for major league baseball because the more they sell at games the more the market grows the more the game is going to grow, thuis enhancing job oppurtunities and the possibilities are endless for the major leagues.
Minor league baseball also experianced a record for growth which is also a good thing because the more the minor leagues succeed the more the game as a whole is going to grow which again in turn inreases job oppurtunities and it is a win win situation for everybody.
One thing that is a concern for Major League Baseball is that several parks are at a close to capacity level already, so there is really no room for growth in these stadiums.
I do think this is a concern to have because if these staduims are already at capacity then no more people will be able to come to the games thus no growth in attendance. But I think that there is alot of staduims in the major leagues that are not even close to capacity. For example the Pittsburgh pirates, and PNC park. They Have a lot of growth to have. They are only at 57.5% of capacity (table from page 14). and they have sold out in the past. One more example is the Kanses City Royals who are only at 48.9% of capacity and they experianced a 16% gain. Which means that if they can gain another 16% they will be doing very well, and if the teams that are close to capacity stays that way, and the teams that are at low capacity numbers go up. Then major League baseball can have an even bigger growth in the future then they did this season, which can be a good thing.

[Week 7]"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'"

Zach Brink..... "Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl"
WEEK 7...Issue 18, Volume 10, Page 29

Volume 10 Issue 24 Pg.5
I think that amount is insane to charge a player.

week 8 "london nfl game to have on-field ads" v-10 issue 25 pg 3
On October 28th the nfl will be playing thier first live game in london which is getting alot of hype. The stadium which hold 90,000 was sold out in a matter of minutes. The nfl wants to make this game special and memorable for the fans so they are deciding right now what they are going to do. But the most surprising and noticeable thing that we will see on the 28th is sponsorship signs on the sidelines, kinda of like what you see on a soccer field.Bridgestone, visa, coors, reebok along with some others will have ads on the sidelines.
I feel that this game that is going to be played in london is going to be beneficial for everyone. It will get the nfl the exposure it deserves plus they will make more profit from this than if it were being played in the US. But i dont like the fact that there are going to be ads on the field. That basically selling out for the cash. The nfl is better than that. Im anxious for the game though

This article is about how Under Armour is going to be sponsoring the High School All-American Game. They agreed to sponsor this game after ESPN announced that they would host the game. With Under Armour sponsoring the event they are going to receive venue signs, commercial inventory, hospitality and uniform, gear and apparel rights during the game.
This games official name is Under Armour High School All- American Game. It will be held on Jan. 5 in Orlando. Under Armour has also sponsored the All-American Lacrosse Classic for the last two years. They believe their focus is on young athletes. Reason they would like to be the sponsor of this big event is because really their cloths that they have been designing really was made for football at first.
I think this is a great idea that Under Armour wants to be the big sponsor of the All-American game. I think it will be good because Under Armour will be able to get more people to buy what they are producing for the the different sports.

"Target’s Chase Field rebranding hits mark"
week 7

ESPN announced that Under Armour will be the title sponsor of their new High School Football all-American game. Under Armour will be plastered on just about everything at the game including the players uniforms along with TV commercials.
I think this is a great idea for Under Armour because kids are starting to wear Under Armour products at younger ages. I feel the younger that kids can identify with the UA clothing and accessories, the longer they will be loyal to the brand. Also, I feel people may see no advantage in using Nike or Adidas products so a fresh face in the sports world will spark sales in people who want to try a new product. Finally, with the game being a high school all american game, you have many high school and college coaches watching the game around the country. This could lead to deals with schools to put the Under Armour symbol on their jerseys and sporting equipment.

This article discusses the fact that Miller Brewing and Molson Coors Brewing have joined forces and are going to try and tackle the BEER GOD known as Anheuser Busch. The experts do not know what to expect with this recent shake up in the beer industry. Some experts believe its going to mean even more money is going to be dropped into marketing and sponsorship, while others think when you take out a major player, less money is going to be involved.
Personally, I think this is going to be a good thing and I think more and more money is going to be poured into sports from the now MILLERCOORS. I think they will be able to contend with the ridiculous amount of money BUD uses and this can only mean better Super Bowl Commericials, well not until 2012 because Anheuser Busch has a contract until then. I think overall this is going to be a good thing and together these companies are going to come up with great marketing strategies and also some great beer.

This is a great opportunity for Under Armor to get huge publicity and to promote there product. this is a big deal for them because there has not been to many commercials on TV like there use to be with Under Armor so may be this will boost there standings. they will give Nike Adidas and other kinds of sport wear a little competition. this is also a great opportunity because other high schools will see this game along with other coaches and if they like the uniforms and all the other products then maybe they will get there equipment from Under Armor. This was a smart move by there company.

“Putting a Myth to Bed?”
Volume 10 Issue 25 Page 38
The article I have chosen to review is about MLB post/regular season games reliance on prime time broadcasts. There has been wide spread complaints on how MLB is disregarding the younger fans of baseball by showing baseball games on prime time networks at later times in the evening. It has been proven that kids are watching late games more than afternoon games, especially on the East Coast. A closer look at Nielsen ratings data showed that later game starts attract larger audiences from all key demographics. The overall appeal of evening games creates an intimacy of viewing for all fans alike and therefore draws larger audiences. In related sporting news, in 1998 ABC moved the start time for “Monday Night Football” up one hour from 9pm to 8pm and had seen a ratings drop of about 7%. Many media figures are criticizing MLB and TV networks for showing such late games which have a great effect on ages 4 to 17 staying up and viewing the game and possibly depriving themselves of sleep.
I agree with the networks on showing MLB games; especially post season games late night because it can only increase in viewer ratings as well as popularity. I do not believe that MLB is missing out on important business development, simply because these late night games will create or induce lasting childhood memories for young baseball fans as well as older fans. Overall, I believe late post season games can only help the sport industry with exposure and gains in popularity.

Does it really matter who had the rights? I mean come on, you have all these fans that want to watch games and they can't. These companies are being selfish and may ruin the realtionship with fans, because the fans may just not routing for that team anymore, then it would not matter if they were on tv because the fans wouldn't be watching anyways

ESPN has been lucky enough that Under Armour has teamed up as their official sponsor for the big All American High School Game. They have agreed to a 3 year deal. The game includes 80 seniors and will be televised on ESPNU on Jan. 5 at 2 pm.
This is the fourth sport for Under Armour to pick up sponsorship for. Under Armour also sponsors lacrosse, baseball, and softball.
This is big for both Under Armour and ESPN. ESPN has been trying to air live high school games all season. Under Armour made a big step in sponsoring the game. This will hopefully attract more viewers because these are the players we are going to see playing college football and potential NFL someday.

This article is about the fact that the Giants-Dolphins game in two weeks will be played in London, England, and just like soccer, will have on the field advertisments. The Nfl has sold six of these deals to Coors, Canon, Visa, Bridgestone Firestone, General Motors and Reebok. They feel that this will help with the international branding of not only these products but of the NFL as a whole.
The NFL is also teaming up with Sky Sports, which televises 160 NFL games in the UK, to help UK fans better understand the game by breaking it down during broadcasts and allowing new fans to enjoy it more because they better understand it.
I like what the NFL is doing to expand their international capabilities, and I believe this will lead to more NFL games outside the US and maybe even a foreign franchise someday.

The NFL will be playing the first game ever on Oct. 28th in london. The game is bringing alot of attention over in that country, the stadium capacity is 90,000 seats and all the tickets were sold within a hour.
I like this idea of the NFL moving some of their games to other countries, its about money and if we can play a few games out of the USA and it will bring in more fans why not do it, just look at the numbers, 90,000 seats sold within a day, during the reg. season of the NFL no teams plays in front of that many people its usually around 60000-70000 fans, if th stadium was bigger im sure they would still sell out the tickets.

"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
Week 8 Vol.10,I-24,pg 3
This article discusses the upcoming NFL game between the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins that will be played at Wembley Stadium in the U.K. next week. The NFL is planning to give the game a more european feel to it with how they are allowing on the field advertising the type that you see at soccer games. The NFL is really trying to re-establish is self overseas after the NFL europe did not work out very well. There is talk of games being played overseas every year now, also in talks of possibly a super bowl being played overseas.
I think that the NFL is seeing the success the NBA is having in tapping into the overseas market. The NBA is definitely world wide entity and the NFL is pushing to be that too.I don't really mind one game a year being played overseas but I think putting the Super Bowl overseas would be a big mistake and while gaining in a audience overseas, I feel there would be tremendous backlash in the states. Some fans have been waiting forever to see their team in the Super Bowl then the year they make it they have to leave the country to see them play. Thats like Premier soccer league coming here and playing their championship game in the U.S. It wouldn't make any sense. While globalizing football looks to be a huge in money making and adding to the popularity of the NFL I feel it needs to be done right and not take too much away from their large fan base that they have in the U.S

This is a three-year deal in which Under Armour will also have venue signs, commercial inventory, hospitality and uniform, gear & apparel rights during the game. The game, which will feature more than 80 of the nation’s top high school seniors, will be played on January 5th in Orlando, Florida.
I think that this is another great opportunity for Under Armour. They already sponsor three other high school All-American games, baseball, softball and lacrosse, but football was the sport Under Armour was built around. Under Armour has always focused its marketing efforts on young athletes and the addition of the Under Armour High School All-American Game should help in that area. With the exception of basketball, football is the largest sport in the United States so this deal should generate a lot of revenue for Under Armour.

WEEK 8
"Industry trying to get a handle on MillerCoors"
vol.10 iss.25 page 1
For almost as long as sports and beer have been around they have been associated with each other.
With Anheuser-Busch as the number one beer company in total revenue and sponsorship for years, and the number 2 and 3 companies with Miller and Coors, Anheuser-Busch is now being heavily competed aainst because Miller and Coors are now MillerCoors from merging their companies.
The reason this is such a big deal is that beer companies are such a large contributer to sponsorships and advertising, MillerCoors will now be able to contribute more money into advertising. MillerCoors, by merging companies they will be able to gain $500 million dollars in synergist savings, allowing the company to advertise and sponsor more.
Also with the merge, MillerCoors will be able to step into the global market that Anheuser-Busch has dominated for years, such as the olympics and other global sporting events.

[Week 8]“London NFL game to have on-field ads"
V-10, I-25, P-3
The game happening in London is between the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins. With the NFL being such a great product, many advertisers see this as a great opportunity to promote their products overseas. Coors, Canon, Visa, Firestone, General Motors, and Reebok have all gotten deals so far.
I think these games are a good idea. There should be at least 1 of these every year. It should never include a playoff game or the superbowl. The pro bowl might be a good idea. It should also happen fairly early in the season.
It is great for the NFL and for the sponsors that are involved to help promote their products in huge oversea markets. The tickets to this game sold within 1 hour of their availability. They are playing in a 90,000 seat stadium. As you can see, the games are quite popular there. The NFL sees this as a way to make more money. That is why the sponsors are so eager to jump on board.

“ESPN prep game gets title sponsor”
V-10 I-25 P-7
This article was about the popular sports company Under Armour. They just recently signed to be the title sponsor of the high school football All-American game hosted by ESPN. This is a three-year deal and it consists of venue signs, commercial inventory, hospitality and uniform, and gear & apparel rights during the game. The game will hopefully be very popular; it will be featuring more than 80 of the nation’s top high school seniors. The game will be played January 5th in Orlando, Florida.
I feel this is a great opportunity for Under Armour, this will really market them as a positive company and generate tons of new funds. They currently sponsor three other high school All-American games, baseball, softball and lacrosse. Football was the sport Under Armour was based on so now they are deciding to finally give back. Under Armour has always had a strong marketing strategy. They base their products around young athletes and what better way then to give them the publicity then through High School All-American Games. Under Armour should blow up even more than before. This is a strong marketing risk and I feel they will be successful.

New NHL constitution would eliminate powerful committee
There is currently a new constitution being ratified for the NHL Player’s Association. This is very important for the NHLPA, as they have lost a lot of stability since the 2004-2005 lock out. There is a 30 man executive board that votes on important issues, with one player representing each team. This group was ignored in 2005 and a small group of about 7 players took matters into their own hands and represented the NHLPA in negotiations with the NHL to agree to a salary cap. This group of 7 players also fired NHLPA boss Bob Goodenow and hired Tes Saskin, who was recently let go himself for being hired without going through the proper steps.
The new constitution makes sure that this mess will not happen again, and that each team will have a say in all matters, with one vote per team. They are also going to create a position for a person that will give general counsel, to try to keep the NHLPA stable for years to come.

[Week 8] “Tire Companies seek traction with consumers”
V-10 I-25 pg-27
This article discusses tire company's and how they have to market their product. As the article said, "It's not milk and bread. you can't hand out samples..." Good year is the main focus in this article showing their different marketing strategies. Starting with NASCAR, Good year Sponsors the top 3 series. They also use their Good Year blimp as a marketing tool bringing it to NASCAR races, offering rides to students from the NCAA final four schools, and showing it at many other sporting events.
I believe Good Year is best known for their blimp. It's an extremely recognizable marketing tool and it's great to market it by offering contests to win rides. However, when it comes to a good tire, I'm going to let my father decide on the best tire for my car and no amount of marketing will change his opinions.

"ESPN prep game gets title sponsor"
vol.10 iss.25 pg.7
The article I chose to write about was called “ESPN prep game gets title sponsor.” It was pretty much about how Under Armour announced that they will be the title sponsor of All-American high school football game. ESPN announced that Under Armour will be everywhere on commercials, the uniforms, signs will be everywhere. Pretty much we will see the Under Armour name everywhere we look. I feel this is a great advantage for Under Armour. It will be very beneficial for them to gain media attention. They will gain a great deal of exposure. I feel this will hopefully help increase their sales. This will bring in people of all age groups, young people playing in the game along with older and younger fans.

"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
Week 8 Vol.10,I-24,pg 3
This article is about football being brought overseas, and I agree with that to a point. In my opinion there is a huge market over there but it is going to be a real sensitive transition for us in the US. They are putting advertisements on the field during this week’s game featuring the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants, the game will be played in the U.K at Wembley Stadium. They are treating this game just like a European soccer game with the advertisements on the field.
In the future they are talking about having more games played over seas, which could really hurt the NFL in the short term. This could also hurt many teams, since they will be losing a home game out of the deal. As well as a lot of revenue for the city that loses there home game. Lots of local business look forward to home games cause this boost the economy for about eight weeks a year. The thing that I disagree with the most is them talking about playing a super bowl game overseas. I think this would the worst thing the NFL could do to the American fan. Everyone waits till there team makes the super bowl and when they finally do it could be the year the game is overseas. Also that is one week you can count on a lot of revenue for a city. There are city’s like New York trying to build a new stadium to host a super bowl, but instead of having the game there they will have it over seas instead.

[Week 8]"Strong ad sales for NBC’s ‘SNF’"
Vol. 10 Issue 24 Pg. 6
This article discusses the fact that NBC's “Sunday Night Football” series is 90 percent sold, with some of the more high-profile games sold out. The fact that 90% of the ads are already sold for the Sunday Night Football is a pretty impressive to me. They still have 10 more games to play and some of them are completely sold, while there are some that are almost sold out. Another part to this article is that the ratings are down for NBC this season by 6% from last season over the first six games. NBC is blaming that on the Competitive nature of the games. Most of them have been blowouts. I think that is a good point, nobody wants to watch a game that is not close.
I think that this is a good thing for football and obvoiusly NBC that these ads for the games are being sold so quickly. It gives the NFL more publisity and it gives NBC more money as well. This seems to be a win win situation for all parties involved.

ESPN Prep Game Gets title Sponsor
V-10 I25 P-7
This article is about ESPN getting a sponsor for the highschool american game. Not only will the they sponsor uniforms which their known for but their we be commercials and signs. They game will host the top 80 highschoiol players in the country all senoirs
I think this a great oppurtuntity for under Armour and athletes around the world. Not only will they be able to market their products to the players who will participate but they will be able to show the world products that havent been released. I believe this will be a stepping stone for under armour before they take over all football apparall

[Week 8]"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
V-10, I-25, pg 3
This article is about the the Giants-Dolphins game in two weeks will be played in London, England, and just like soccer, will have on the field advertisments.
I like what the NFL is doing because it will attract more people to get interested in the NFL just like the NBA is doing right now.

"ESPN Prep Game gets Title Sponsor"
WEEK 8...vol.10 iss.25 pg.7
The High School All American game has picked up a sponsor for its High School Football game that takes place in January for the highly looked at 80 Seniors. Under Armour decided that it would sponser the game. They will have their name on the uniforms, commericials and banners everywhere during the game. I think it helps the High School gain recognition and maybe gives the players some incentives and apperal for participating in the game. It also will help Under Armour continue to dominate the World of Football marketing. They are becoming a Monopoly in Football. Thousands of people watch this game because its nationially televised and Colleges and Recruiters will be all over this game so it will promote the Under Armour all through the world with every age being involved. SO i think it helps pretty much everyone involved in the process of this High School Football Game

"ESPN adds early rounds at Masters"
week 8 Vol. 10 Iss. 25 pg. 10
New Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne has agreed to a deal with ESPN to allow them to air the first and second rounds of the Masters. Since 1982 the USA Network has shown the early rounds of the Masters on television. ESPN will air live showings from 4-7 pm and re-air showings from 8-11 pm. ESPN HD will also have both rounds of the Masters. Terms of the deal have not been released but it is thought that Augusta National signs one year deals.
I think this is a great move for Augusta National. Even though the early rounds of the Masters have been on USA since 1982, ESPN has become the largest sports television station in the world and it only seems fitting to air the biggest golf tournament of the year on that station. It is also a good move for ESPN showing they can compete with any market to get what they want for their station to air.

[WEEK 8]"ESPN Prep Game gets Title Sponsor"
Vol.10 Iss.25 pg.7
Under Armour decided to sponsor the High School Football game that showcases all the highly recruited high school athletes in America. With the game being nationally televised, Under Armour will be able to show their unique styles to all ages, players, teams, etc. They will be playing their commercials that get the attention of all football players.
Under Armour hit the football scene hard and continues to grow and outreach to other sports. Soon Under Armour will take the sport marketing world by the neck and have total control. This is a nice step and opportunity that Under Armour has taken advantage off. Sales will likely increase due to this move.

"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
Week 8 Vol.10,I-24,pg 3
This article is about the NFL taking football overseas. I feel that this is a good idea with major drawbacks. They are putting advertisements on the field during this week’s game featuring the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants, the game will be played in the U.K at Wembley Stadium.
They have been considering this move to take NFL games overseas for a while now. This will also hurt teams by losing a home game out of there schedules. Revenue for the city will also take a hit along with lots of local business look forward to home games cause this boost the economy for about eight weeks a year. The league is also considering taking a superbowl overseas also, which isn’t a good idea at all. Ticket prices would sky rocket and fans would say they would rather watch it on TV anyway. Plus there are city’s like New York trying to build a new stadium to host a super bowl.

[Week 8]"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
V-10, I-25, Pg. 3
This article is about the New York Giants vs. Miami Dolphins game that will be played in London, England, 2 weeks from now. This will not be your typical NFL game due to the on-field advertisements that will be displayed. The corporations that will be involved in this little experiment is: Coors, Canon, Visa, Bridgestone Firestone, General Motors, and Reebok. Another move the NFL is making is the pairing up with Sky Sports, which televises 160 NFL games in the UK. They believe this will help people in the region better understand the game by breaking down various rules and regulations during broadcasts.
I believe this is a good idea, because the NFL has teamed up with major corporations to have on-field ads. This will benefit the company’s by marketing their products to numerous viewers. The NFL is also trying to expand its popularity to other parts of the world and show why this one of the top sports in the United States. Maybe they will create a world interest and popularity in their sport just like the NBA has already done. Therefore, I think it is a good move by the NFL to try to expand its fans, because in the end it will most likely lead to more revenue.
