IN Katrina's wake, sports must rise to the challenge
volume 8 issue 19, p.28

the article goes to show how human kind have to or at least should work as a society to help each other. at one point we will realize that entertainers do recieve too much money and the important jpbs are not paid well enough. the media will show how a player gave 25 thousand dollars or something and then makea big deal out of how generous it was. when in all actuality it is like a regular guy giving ten dollars. Players and owners should step up in times like these because it is the regular person or the regular fan that is making it capable for these guys to make their living. But it should be more than just people from this region who are donating or helping help. whether players like or not they are a bigger influence on people than they know it. so players should be encourage to help and spend thier money wisely instead of buying things that they already have.

Movies are one of the top drivers of product placement in the marketing mix. As displayed in the article, Nike is the top company to utilize movie product placement. Since Nike is solely focused on marketing over manufacturing, this is in lign with their marketing plan. A sports product's target market is also a significant driver of the placement. The top movie, "Are We There Yet?" is a film that is aimed toward the pre-teen market segment, which in studies, has shown that this segment is one of the top spenders. Product placement is an essential component of a sports marketing mix.

Nike Golf ready to spend on driver.

Nike is coming out with a new golf club driver which there really exicted about and are willing to spend millions of dollars on. In the article they talk about all these different ways that they can show the new driver out to the public. Personaly that they might be going a little too far trying to get it out in the open. It's good to advertize a lot and make sure that your product is known, but nike is well known already. I'm not saying don't advertize there club but there making seem like nike is something new. The article also talks about Tiger woods using the club. He's a great golfer and that is a good way to show the club.

Site launches athlete stock market game
volume 8 issue 20, p.9

A new intenet based interative stock market game is being launched called Prototrade.com. this is a complex game in which athletes are valued determined by a sophisticated "Moneyball" inspired system measuring their benefit to their team on every play and even based on trades, involving them or their own teammates.
This was developed by former Steinburg & Moorad employee Mike Kerns and MIT-trained quantitative analysis expert Jeff Ma. They don't want to call it a fantasy game because the belief is that you can not do all of this in a "fantasy game".
It is being launched from a 30 person company that has been working for two years to bring this sophisticated "market" to the internet. there will be a range from 5 dollar to 100 dollar games that will include the players on witch you may decide to represent or be a active GM towards.
I like this idea, it may sound as though the internet is becoming rediculas to alot of poeple who may get involved strickly to win (or lose) money, but I am more interested in the "experience". This may not have to do with my genereation but if there is a future sports marketer out there that wants to integrade a little more instruction into there curriculum than this is a good step to take. You don't have to spend any money, there is a finacial background that may be taught with out the "gamble". I do plan to take part in Protrade.com because I would like to make this industy a part of my like, and if that means it is going to be for work or for a past time than that is what I presume to do.

Sideline Seating not in lineup
Volume 8 Issue 20 page 4

This article deals with NFL teams toying with the idea of on the field seating for home games. The idea was sure to be a big hit, but due to the ongoing collective bargaining agreement which has not been reconciled yet, it doesn’t look like it will be happening in the near future. NFL insiders say that the idea has not been totally eliminated, but it has taken a backseat until other things are resolved. A few teams experimented with the idea of having fans in seats on the field last year, and some say that it was a hit. Others aren’t saying whether or not it will be a sure thing. The Patriots said last year that they could generate one million dollars in revenue with the seats they are planning to install in each corner of Gillette stadium. I feel that an opportunity like this should not be wasted. What team wouldn’t want to generate an additional million in sales just for having a select number of fans sit in lazy boys in the corner of the end zone? I am sure that the big markets in the league would have people bidding higher and higher for these never before possible seats. It would be a big mistake if the league and the players association didn’t come to some sort of agreement on this issue.

"McClatchy's Pirates demonstrate the art of doing less with more" Volume 8, Issue 20

In this article Andrew Zimbalist talks of how Kevin McClatchy has turned the Pittsburgh Pirates into one of baseballs best overall profits my making an estimated 12.8 million dollars in this past year. He states, though the Pirates keep losing and getting worse each year, they keep pulling in more and more revenue.
However, later in his article, Zimbalist states that the Pirates keep pulling in more income and revenue, but keep getting worse each year because they cannot generate that revenue towards the salary of the team. It is stated that the small markets teams will get up to "$300 million" in revenue sharing but if they win and get better they have to give back "more than 45%" of that back as reduced transfer payments from MLB.
In my opinion, I think this is ludoucris because it means those who are in small markets who improve jsut have to give back the money they jsut earned in revenue, forcing them not to improve their payrolls. Plus, the big market teams still benefit from this the most because the money they earn is so much more that their 45% still leaves them with hundreds of millions in earnings each year. This 55% the big market teams have left over in the end, is still more than the 100% earned bythe small market teams.
Until, baseball can come up with a system that rewards the small market teams who improve their field performance and revenues, and punishes the big markets who faulter in on-field perfomance; the davids will keep losing, and goliath will keep prevailing over all.

"Back on the Ice"
vol8 issue 20

This article is about how the Boston Bruins are trying to bring back the fans after the work stoppage that cause last season to be canceled. The Bruins are not only using ads with current players but also old hall of fame Bruins like Ray Bourque, Cam Neely and Terry O'Reilly. They even got one of the most famous Boston Bruin fans to do a special ad. Actor Denis Leary did a special ad during his FX tv show "Rescue Me" explaining to the fans that the team is ready to win the Stanley Cup. The Bruins GM believes that the fans will come back for the new season but fears that they don't believe the Bruins will have much success. I believe that the Bruins management are taking a pretty good angle towards the fans. The Bruins have a good team and have a chance to do very well this season. Letting the fans know that winning the cup is there main priority is very important in my eyes. Team captain Joe Thorton told fans in Boston that he's not leaving until he wins a cup for the city. Reading this article as a Bruin fan i would be very anxious for the season to start and have an up beat attitude as well. The bruins are making it clear for everyone and because of it they are enjoying a 92 percent season ticket renewal which is among the highest in the NHL. With the success of the Red Sox and Patriots the Bruins need to provide a championship soon,

McClatchy's Pirates demonstrate the art of doing less with more.
This article talks about how Kevin McClatch the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates has increased his revenue even though the Pirates are one of the worst teams in MLB. Small market teams can not get better with big name players because they would have to give back to MLB as transfer payments.
I believe that baseball is going down hill. Until MLB puts in a salary cap the small market teams like the Pirates will get pushed around by the Yankees.
Americas pasttime is falling apart and untile MLB finds a way that all the teams are equal than it will continue to go down hill.

Atlanta speedway prepares for first event since tornado.
This article is about how Atlanta Motor Speedway will be hosting its first event since the total destruction in July. Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS) will try to be ready for the Nextel Cup Series on Oct. 14. With the reconstruction of the speedway they opted to make some improvements.
I believe that it is a good idea to make improvements to the speedway. NASCAR is a sporting event that attracts hundreds or thousands of people, new improvements are necessary. They are also building more suits and grandstand seats.
When mother nature does what she did to AMS they need to try to overcome it and be ready for the next event.

Bon Jovi puts his Soul into career as sports owner

On top of acting in movies, tv series, and singing, Bon Jovi also is a co-owner of an arena football league franchise. Bon Jovi named it the Philadelphia Soul and it led the league in attendance it's first two games.

Bon Jovi used his celebrity standing as a way to make money and it showed in the first couple games. Bon Jovi doesn't just sit back and let everything happen, he actually takes part and controls alot of what happens. He wanted to relate to the fans and make it possible for more people to be able to come see the football games. He wanted people to be able to afford tickets to the game.

I think it's great the Bon Jovi took on this league for himself and other. He understands that its hard for a lot of people to pay for these tickets and wanted to make it easier. People realize that his point of view is actually being used and he's probably gaining even more fans. Bon Jovi is very experienced with what is needed to market your products from being a singer, so i think it helps that he's a part of this league.

Ads hope ‘geek’ can boost trading card sales
Vol, 8 issue 21, pg. 10

The trading card industry has been in a slump since the card “glut” of the mid 1990’s, says Peter Gudmundsson who is the president Beckett Media L.P. They are offering “Card Geek” ads to sports magazine in hope to spark the rest of the trading card industry and the general sports publications, the purpose is primarily to agree that trading cards are a cause worth getting behind.
The ads are going to be full-color ads which feature athletes such as Carmelo Anthony, Mike Modano, Mark Teixeira, Lito Sheppard, and many more. All though only Modano appears in uniform, right now MLB, and possibly NBA are going to agree to show the players in uniform.
Since Beckett’s spark in this new found energy F+W Publications, and Upper Deck, who are rivals, have become mildly turned on. Beckett says that they encourage this behavior yet hope that everything maintains civilized while doing so.
What Beckett is doing is slightly impressive and very daring. For the most part when I write a critique it is because of a good article and an excellent idea. Although in this case I think that Beckett might just be throwing out a desperation move. Trading cards in the past generation and in our younger youth days were “huge”, I do remember buying boxes that fit the trading cards that I would buy, there was a good industry for some time to be involved in trading cards. In today’s society I can’t see the youth absolutely “needing” a Michael Jordan rookie card like I once felt about it.
My belief of this being a desperate move stands, but for a desperate move Beckett is doing it the right way by not trying to do it on there own, they are also attempting to sparking the rest of the trading card industry, and as we know you can’t be all by your self in a huge market, you need others to compete with.

Stadiums overlap builds time pressure into schedule
Vol 8, Issue 22, pg 33

The St. Louis cardinals have been one of the most successful baseball franchises in recent years. They are in the process of building a new stadium in downtown, right next to the old Busch stadium. New Busch stadium will be basically on top of the old stadium. The demolition of old Busch stadium must wait until the season is over for the Cardinals, which could be late October depending on how well they do this year in the playoffs. I can see how a team would want to incorporate some of its old memories into the new place, but I don’t think that it should jeopardize the economics of the franchise as a whole. I think that planning to build old into new is a bad move in this situation because you might be creating a money problem if you do. But it looks like it is too late now.

An ‘NFL World,’ and they’re just living in it by TERRY LEFTON Vol 8, Issue 22
This articlke talks about howw how the NFl network plans to have new commercials with NFL stars in their own animated world. They plan to do things like have Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis is driving a bus, and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer is throwing a rolled newspaper to St. Louis Rams receiver Torry Holt, who lives in a house where the mailbox is a football and the exterior lights are Rams helmets. They hope ro bring more attention to the network with these commercials. The NFL Network, now in 35 million homes, hopes to produce four 30-second and several 15-second NFL World ads before the regular season ends.
I think that this is an great idea and will definitly work in favor of the NFL network. It will get children interseted as well as adults.

And now, back to the game
Vol. 8 Iss. 22

For the past year there has been no major hockey league such as the NHL. Paul Swangard was a fan before business personal of the game and he talks about the past and the present of the game. He states that in the new begging of the league there must be a restructuring of its economics knowing that a forged partnership with the players and owners link to it current revenue and revenue growth to enable sustainable health of the sport and its fan base. To do this there was a “action plan” made up, 1 Apologize to the consumers experiencing the service failure, 2 Making it personal, 3 Offer a value added solution to the problem, 4 Atone for the incontinence by offering risk reducing incentives and/or rewards for repurchase, and 5 Follow up.
This article is based on ones bringing up on NHL, its players and its historical value to ones personal feelings. I believe that there is a lot more people feeling the way that Paul Swangard feels and that this rebuilding stage is going to be a success for years to come. The largest part of this article I think is defiantly there action plan, because it seems that in the business world you always need a plan for success and they defiantly have done there homework on this situation.

Some Like Look of NBA dress code
volume 8, issue 22

A dress code hasnt been approved yet for the NBA but there is a lot of support for this idea. Antonio Davis the President of national basketball players association favors the dress code to go along with the image related elements players affirmed with the collective bargaining agreement.
The dress code requires the players to wear sport coat, slacks and dress shoes when arriving at a game and when not in uniform on or off the court, collared shirt or turtleneck with slacks or Khakis.
jeans, sneakers, hats or shorts would not be premitted but there may be exceptions for basketball clinics.
The image related elements include:mandatory player attendance at team held media seminars and business seminars, if they do not attend they receive a 20,000 dollar fine.
no firearms when traveling on behalf of the league, any violation, suspension and fine of 50,000
Players are responsible for 12 court appearances this season, two for season ticket holders and five group appearances.

It would be nice to see the NBA athletes dressed to travel and on the sidelines. They are professionals and they should dress like professionals if they are not going to be playing in the game. I do agree that they should be allowed to dress in whatever for basketball clinics.

"An NFL World, and They’re Just Living in it" by Khalif Woodard Vol 8, Issue 22 by Charles Howell

This article is about how the NFL wants to start working on new commercials to help promote them in a more positive way. The commercial will involve some of the NFL players in their own wild and unrealistic world. The commercial will involve Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals, Tory Holtof the St. Louis Rams, and Jerome Bettis of the Pittsburgh Steeler. In the commercial Jerome Bettis will be driving a school bus and Carson Palmer will throwing a newspaper to Tory Holt. This commercial is just one of the four being developed to help to promote the NFL network, who are already able to be seen.

This is an interesting article because its purpose can be considered very broad. This promotional strategy can be used to promote the players or the League. I think that this strategy will also help to gain more of the youths attention. It might be able to allow the kids to relate to the NFL better. This new strategy seems to be very animated and elementary, this will bring the kids closer to the NFL. I think that this is a very interesting strategy and I defintely agree with this new idea.

"Some Like Look Of NBA Dress Code" Volume 8, Issue 22

The NBA now adays, is looked down upon from other professional sports, such as hockey and football because of its image. Their is always trouble going on in the NBA because of the trouble that has been going on in the NBA the past years. Some of these troubles are the fight between the Indiana Pacers players and the Detroit fans. Another is the shooting of a limo-driver, allegedly by Jason Williams, formelry of tyhe New Jersey Nets.
Other's are constant brawls between players during games, or vulgar languange after a game to the press because a player was upset. Finally, it has been know that a lot of the players smoke marijuana and have admitted to doing so because their is no testing for it because of labor agreement between the league and its players union.
So, the NBA has decided to atleast start enforce some normed business policies that happen normally throughout the rest of the business world. The poilicy they are trying ot enforce is a strict dress code for all NBA players before arriving and for leaving after games. The league is trying to enforce the players to wear a sport coat, slacks and dress shoes when arriving at a game and when not in uniform on or off the court, collared shirts or turtlenecks with slacks or khakis.
Jeans, sneakers, hats or shorts would not be premitted, but there may be exceptions for basketball clinics. Also if this is not followed, there would be a $20,000 fine.
In my original opinion when seeing this on the news, I thought it was ludacrous. However, after thinking it through and realizing what the NBA's image is and how its players carry themselves on and off the court, I feel there needs to be something done in order for the players to get an understanding that this is a professional business. They cannot walk around and do as they please because they are not the boss of their team, nor the league. They are the entertainment, but there has to be a limit and rules set forth. I believe this is a positive start because it will make the players do something they wont like to do; show some professionalism, pride, and respect for their business while on the job, something that happens in every other business in America.

"Reality king ready for another round with 'The Contender'"
Volume 8, Issue 23

'The Contender' which debut its first season this past spring on NBC generated lots of money and plenty of ratings because it was watched by 10+ million people jsut in the United States alone, and plenty more throughout the world. For some reason after its first season of airing, NBC cancelled 'The Contender' for some unknown reason. Just recently, ESPN in additon with Dreamworks Television picked up the show and will start airing the second season this upcoming spring in 2006.
In my opinion, i think this is a great pick-up for ESPN because, I know myself, plenty of my friends and acquantances watched the show every week. Like Mark Burnett(Producer of the series), exclaims its a, "Rocky-esque kind of way--of telling the story." He means the show tells the story of the underdog and lots of people jumped on that and became fans and will remain fans. They will remain and more will join, because in America, we love and always will root for the underdog.

An 'NFL World; And they're just living in it. volume 8 issue 23

I think this is a great idea for the NFL. I hate watching a football game being all hyped up with energy and then a commercial comes on about cutting carbs or something like that. Those commercials just don't belong during football games. "My opinion". Having something to do with the game or football related would be nice.

The one thing that i'm not sure about is why the NFL is doing this? The article stated that they are trying to get rid of the clutter of commercials by creating it's own kind of commercials. I know that different types of companies spend BIG money just for 30 seconds for prime time viewing. That's what i'm not sure about, why take money away? I like the idea about more NFL and less none NFL. If the NFL pays money to make the commercials and pays money to the acters on the commercials where do they get the money back.

Now i'm not saying that the NFL needs money and is taking a big chance by doing this, but i do wonder how the NFL plans on making back the money they used to make the commercials.

I have seen the one out of four commercials that the NFL plans on making. I like it and there much better then some other commercials i've seen during prime time television.

Vol.8 Issue 23 Oct. 10-16, 2005
"Dallas arena changes club seats to party suites"

Upon reading this article, it explained how American Airlines Center in Dallas has created two party suites for the large crowds for the Spurs, Stars and Mavricks games. These luxury party suites could generate up to $500,000 in revenue a season. The area's sales staff just started selling those suites in mid July after the schedules were released. These luxury boxes sell for $8,000 a game for the Dallas Stars NHLHockey team and $9,000 or $10,500 for the NBA basketball team the Mavericks.
I feel this is a good way to bring in that extra money for the fans that are willing to spend to see there favorite professional team. These suites seem great for business ejoyment or even simply fans willing to pay a crazy amount of money to "say" that they sat in those seats to watch a game. It is also pretty cool that these seats are a geat deal for what you are paying for to get your money's worth for that game. I feel that more facilities should do the same thing, just like Dallas to bring in the extra revenue. Hopefully, this new idea can lead to further expanding of arenas, bigger crowds or maybe even better suites or better club boxes for the sporting faciliities in other leagues.

San Juan arena expects sellout for NBA game, has hopes of landing an All-Star Game
Vol. 8 Iss. 23, Pg. 15

Alberto Perez, the vice president of sales and marketing for Gianfi, the local promoter staging games at SMG operating Coliseo De Puerto Rico. Is heavily attempting to stage NBA events at the $240 million complex. The 18,000 crowd capacitated facility anticipates on selling tickets for the range of $40 to $250 for courtside. The Miami Heat are going to have exhibition game at this facility and as of now 16,000 tickets have been sold, showing the upper management that the people will come out. Along with showing that the people will come out they also have a heavily populated island at 2.5 million people. Not only do they want regular season exhibition games, they also would like to host events such as the NBA all-star game.
This is a good thing for Puerto Rico, it will involve a lot of marketing strategies that must show and be prove that this wouldn’t be a waste of revenue for the NBA to become involved.

"Reality king ready for another round with the contender" Vol 8 issue 23. The contender was a popular show that came out last year on NBC. Slyvester Stalone "rocky" was the host of the popular reality tv show about boxing. The show was one of the highest rated on NBC network with nearly 10 million tuning in every week. After the season, for whatever reason, the show was cancelled by NBC. The article didnt explain why which is surprising considering the shows poularity. However, ESPN has picked up the show for it's second season in spring of 06.

This is great for ESPN to pick up the show. Im not a big fan of some tv shows but this one i really enjoy. Some reality shows often dont have much "reality" to them at all. Unlike others, this show is the real deal. It depicts the life of a boxer and the trials and tribulations that come with the sport. ALso I think this show helps the sport of boxing which is in desperate need of some excitement. There was a time in this country when boxing was the most popular sport, but the corruption and greed took over and ruined it to a certain extent. The contender examplifies the sport of boxing in its purest form.

Alt-sports' Mirra gets a challenge Volume 8 Issue 23 p. 10

Action sports star Dave Mirra is critiqued in this article in a few different aspects. One being if he is good enough to compete or if he is passed his prime. The reason talking about that is that they compare him and his endorsements to that of Tony Hawk and if he can reach the lever Tony has. Also they talk about up and coming new sensation action sports star Ryan Guettler, the 'next' Dave Mirra.

For the matter of Mirra competing past his prime even though he thinks he still has plenty of good years left in him seems to sound like the issue with Michael Jordan. Why do these athletes keep ruining there name by competing past their prime and putting their value on a down slide. But Mirra also has all these endorsements that are keeping his name at the top of the list. He is a great person to have for commercials ads and the likes of MTV. He appeals to both guys and girls in that all guys want to have his success and riches and he attracts the likes of the females. So whether Mirra becomes another Tony Hawk is not really a question, Mirra has himself at a point that he feels confident in himself.

DALLAS ARENA CHANGES CLUB SEATS TO PARTY SUITES

For the past two years the American Airlines Center in Dallas have had people calling to to get suites for 50-60 people. The only thing wrong with that was that the center only had suites to fit 32 people. Now they have two party suites that fit up tp 60 people. The Stars have only had a couple games and both of the boxes are reserved for 25 ports events. The boxes sell for $8,000-10,500 epending on what team is playing. The price includes the tickets, 15 parking passes and foor and beverage packages.

I think this is a great way to make money. Now people don't have to reserve two rooms and be seperated. This will be great for company packages and things like that. For 60 people to go to the game it would cost about $6,000 anyhow, so they might as well add their parking tickets, a suite, food, and drinks to that too. I feel that if it keeps selling the boxes and makes a lot of money, than other arena's will follow them.

Chew on this: Earnhardt Jr. plugs energy product
Vol. 8 Iss. 24 Pg. 7

BestSweet Inc., a North Carolina based marketer is committing roughly 5 million dollars to activate its endorsement with NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. The ad will include Jr. with a pack of chews with a highlighted phrase saying,” I’ve got a new formula for winning”, the name will be XLR8. These chews will include a combination of taurine, ginseng, guarana, caffeine, vitamin B, and a cherry flavor. The target audience will be at first targeted toward a viaraty of men’s magazines, but Dirk Edwards, vice president of BestSweet Inc. says they are looking to expand the ad campaign farther.
I like this marketing strategy, this is a low priced item at suggested resale price of $1.99 and it features a “superstar image”. So many people these days are looking for that edge and if is as easy to chew on a piece of gum than that Dale Earnhardt Jr. does than I believe that the product will be a success. Jr. isn’t doing all that well this season and to be able to market his “No. 8 team” like this means that someone behind the curtains is doing a good job for the him and his team.

Volume 8 Issue 25 pgs. 1 and continued on 24
lebron james has recently fired his agent and hired his three friends to take over his management. Labron hired his lifelong friend Maverick Carter to head the management. Some in the sports industry say that this is a big mistake on Lebrons place, but others say that Carter has the ability, he asks the right questions and building a team that lacks his experience.
The group call themselves the 4horseman, which is lead by Lebron, carter and two other friends, Randy Mims and Richard Paul. They have reserved the names 4 horseman development and 4 horseman management. Mims handles jame's complicated logistics and travel schedule, Carter handles marketing, public relations and overall brand, and Paul works with Labron's image.
Although carter does lack the experience he is hiring people that will help with Labron. They hired a financial adviser, Kurt Schoeppler, Keith Estabrook was recenlty hired too, as executive public relations. Hiring Leon Rose a philidelphia lawyer who has Allen Iverson as one of his clients. one of the biggest decisions that Lebron and his team will have to face is when Lebron becomes a free agent, will he stay with the Cavaliers or go to New york or Los Angeles. Carter said he is very happy with the Cavaliers but cannot say whether he will feel that way in the future.
I feel that Lebron is old enough to make his own decisions. I think that is was very nice of Labron to put trust in his three friends to run the management team with him. With the help that Carter gets in the industry, he will learn and gain the experience that he needs. Lebron is so big right now and he will keep growing, at least he has three people working with him that he knows and trusts and he knows that he has their support and their honesty to do the best for him.

"Lebron James Fires Agent, Hires 3 Friends" Pgs.1&24
Volume 8, Issue 25
Lebrons James fired his agent and hired three of his friends to become part of a business management group called the "Four Hoursemen". These friends are, Maverick Carter who will head the group, Kurt Schoeppler who wil lbe the financial advisor, and Kieth Estabrook who will be the public relations consultant. Also, the hired Allen Iverson's longtime and current lawyer Leon Rose so everything is done right and lawfully so their are not any future problems in the management group.
In my opinion, I feel this could be a good or a bad idea. It could be a good idea because Lebron because it will give Carter who wants to be a sport agent a very good and educative experience because he will be working for a professional atheletes. Also, it will do the same for his two other friends.
This could be a bad idea because even though his friends might be very educated and optimistic, niether has very little if any experience at their jobs. Also, James is very young himself and inexperienced in the both professions he is now in(NBA & 4Horsemen Sport Management Group). This could hurt James' future contracts and financial future because vulnerability comes with inexperience. This causes employers to mislead and purposely misinterpret contracts so the player/athlete does not always get what he/she thinks they are getting because of clauses and other items written in "fine print" on those contracts.
In the end it could go either way but I hope the best comes out decision for James and his three friends.

"Mcclatchy's Pirates demonstrate the art of doing less with more." vol 8 issue 20. This article talks about how Kevin Mcclatchy has made the pittsburgh pirates a profiable organization despite the fact that they continue to lose and get worse almost every year. Mcclatchy has increased revenue by almost 12 million but cannot transfer it to the palyers salaries. There is a rule in MLB that if the team actually improves they have to give a percentage back nearly half profits at the end of the year! This is why MLB is not americas pastime any more. MLB needs a salry cap to ensure that every team has a legitiment shot and turning a profit and competing for a championship.

"Some like the NBA dress code" Vol 8 issue 22. This article talks about the new NBA dress code enforced before the season stating that all players must dress professionally. That means no jewlery, hats, sneakers, and so forth before or after the games as well as when sitting on the bench. It seems to me that the hip hop culture that has taken over ever since Jordan retired, is being rejected by commisioner David Stern. Orginally, Stern embraced the thug image many of the players protraied. But after last years situation with detriot fans and Indiana players, the NBA is going in a different direction. The dress code sends the message that to players that they are professionals and are expected to conduct themselves in an acceptable manner. Some agree and some disagree with the dress code. Personally I agree. The NBA is a business and theses players are making millions of dollars it doesnt hurt to present yourself in a good image. They say you dress how act sometimes. MAybe the dress code will rub off on some of the NBA stars.

Lebron James Fires Agent, Hires three friends. Vol 8 pg24 issue 25. NBA superstar Lebron JAmes fired his agent recently for details undisclosed. The most recent of many firings in the sports agency industry recently. A lot of athletes are getting rid of the their agents before they really get a chance. James decided to hire 3 close friends and the group even has a nickname the 4 hoursman. I noticed a few others read this article and like them i find it interesting. Although some might question Lebrons decision on hiring friends to represent him, i beleive he is actually being pretty smart. Why have someone represent you that you havent known for over a year and risk being taken advantage of. Why not hire people you know and trust to represent you? According to the article, James actually was a boyhood friend with Maverick Carter. Much of the time its not what you know but who you know in the business world that will get you ahead. I think James is doing what most people would probablly do in his situation and thats helping his friends and surrounding himself with people he knows and trust and will be looking out for is well being, not how much money they can make off him. The people he hired are also very capable and trained to do the job. I think when you have as much money and are as famous and young as Lebron James, there are a lot of people who are looking to exploit you. I feel James made a good decision.

"SkyCam gets its shot" Vol. 8 Issue 25 Page 16
The skycam camera will be airing the game against Virginia Tech and Miami for the entire game. This is the first time that the skycam camera will be used. The camera will let the viewers see a different perspective of the game. ESPNU general manager Burke Magnus said "if the skycam works well than they will use it for the college basketball season. The skycam is suspended from four cables and it hovers over the field and followes the actions being covered. The most basic package for college football costs no less than $30,000 dollars.
The skycam camera is a wonderful idea to help keep the fans into the game. The fans that are die harders will continue to watch, but this is more for the people who just watch the game. The different angles of the game will be a great improvment.
It costs pretty penny to show the skycam, however it will improve the game of football for the fan sitting at home.

MLB cachet, fashion flash gives New Era big sales gains.

59Fifty has been MLB's exclusive cap since 1994. This cap business has been running for 85 years. Now a days the business is doing all they can to keep up with the demand for their hats. Estimates for New Era run at around $250-$300 million a year. MLB hats are out selling an other product provided by MLB. No other sport wears caps during play and baseball has become a major sport recently leading to the rise in sales of baseball caps. The caompany says "It's become like women and shoes."

The Women didn't fail. Management failed.

Wrold team tennis found and tennis great Billie Jean King sat down for q and a with CBS Sports. She collaborate on things like men control the media and it makes things very difficult. All we want is a level playing field. And finall She spoke on whether or not athletes should be role models and gave the example of the US Womens soccer team. I first agree that men do dominantly control the media which would most likely be somewhat biased against womens sports. However it would be almost impossible for womens sports to be at a "level playing field". There is no way competition would compare to male sports. This is why most men don't watch womens sports when they are on. It's not entertaining to them. This would be a loss in profit for the media that sponsors or broadcasts these events. I do agree about what she said about athletes and role models. She would like them to be but it doesn't mean its going to happen. Just because someone is an exceptional athlete doesn't mean that htey are a good person. She used the womens soccer team and said they were all great role models. Then she was asked what happened with them, she replied management failed.

Spalding rolls out no-leak ‘Neverflat’ ball
Vol. 8 Iss. 26 Pg. 8

Five years ago Spalding increased it basketball sales more than 50 percent when it introduced the Infusion technology, this is basically a miniature pump built into the basketball. Today the Infusion technology is present in all types of Spalding recreational balls, such as footballs, soccer balls, and volleyballs. Spalding’s latest technology has been termed “Neverflat”, and is introduced with a new membrane, a redesigned valve (from the infusion technology), and the addition of NitroFlate, a substance added to the ball during inflation that forms a barrier preventing seepage, and will only need inflated around 365 days. The sales will begin during this month at stores such as Dick’s for a price of 40 dollars.
I happened to be working at Dick’s Sporting Goods when the “Infusion” first hit the market, and you could just tell from the begging that this was a product that people would want because next to the basketball’s we sold basketball pumps for an additional 5 dollars (for a cheep one). It just made sense to buy this product because it was approximately the same price as other balls’ of the same quality. Now that they added this new NitroFlate membrane, weather it works or not, the short run sales are going to be huge, now if this membrane actually works wonders like they promote I believe that this is a huge long term profit agent for Spalding.

"Spalding rolls out no-leak ‘Neverflat' ball"
Volume 8, Issue #26 Page 8

Five years ago, Spalding bourhgt into the sports world, "The Infusion". The infusion was a revolution in the sports world because it introduced the air basketball pump inside the basketball. What it exactly was a miniature pump that came out of the pump and sucked air in through the ball. However, having used the ball in the past, I realized just like everybody else that after a short time of usage, the ball became to deflate, because of seepage through the air tight spot in the ball where the pump was located. This ofcourse did not affect sales immediately because spalding's, in its's first year of marketing the ball's sales went "throught the roof". Though they sold so much, they still ahd problems in the ball because of many people complainin of seepage bc I went to the Dunham's to buy one and the employee told me it would not be a good idea because of all the complaints about deflation.
Now spalding is introuding the 'Neverflat" ball which is the same concept except it has a Nitroflate, which is a substance added to the ball which surrounds where the air is being pumped in to prevent seepage. It supposed to only need air no less than every 365days.
In my opinion this will immediately send sales "through the roof" once again within the first few months. However, if this new technology does not work for the ball, I believe that spalding will quit because it will cause the customer to quit buying its' products because of lack of success. This will cause a lack of trust in the cusomer and drop spaldings sales framatically which will be horrible for the company because they've already lost customers because of better competition to other products in the industry.

Spalding Rolls out no leak "neverflat" ball
Vol 8 issue 26 pg 8

Spalding increased sales by more than fifty percent by introducing the infusion technology five yeras ago. They inserted a samll pump inot the basketball. I remember a lot of my friend bought these when they first came out. Today all types of spalding balls include the infusion pump: soccer, footballs, and volleyballs. "Neverflat" is their newest technology which incorporates the infusion technology with a few adjustments. Their is a new substance that prevents air leakage. Now, the balls will only need to be inflated once a year. The starting price of this is $40 a ball. To me, I think this is a great product and if they can prevent leakage it will be the future of all sporting balls. I can't remember how many times I have wanted to play some type of sport but my ball was flat so now you won't have to worry about that. I believe either way this ball will have success at first. After that, it is up to how well the ball really works. Overall, I think it is a great idea and product.

This article was about a survey done by the Atribution Personal People Meter. This test was done to see what kinds of TV programs were most often watched in and out of homes. They did this test by attatching a device to the subject's waiste that could track what people view anywhere they go. The study showed that ESPN2 was the most wached network in homes, and FOX Sports came in second place.
I feel that this is an important study with important results as well. It seems as though the media gets a bad reputation because of violence in teenagers being blamed on TV and other forms of mass media. This proves that violent programs are not even the most often watched. Also, I feel that sports are getting a bad reputation in schools and as a result they are being cut from school budgets. This study proves how important sports are in society. It also proves that the attention given to sports in schools is well deserved.

Volume 8 Issue 20 (preivious article was issue 21)

This article is about a new sports website called protrade.com. Protrade.com is an athlete stock market game. The site uses NFL players and stats. It is set up very similar to Footbal, where players can pick their team and players and even trade between members at Protrade.com, however Protrade.com refuses to call it a fantasy game. The creater says that it is much more advanced than a fantasy game or video game and more interactive as well. I feel that sites such as Protrade.com are excellent sites. I feel that it teachs the younger generation of teenagers and young adults that use them valuable skills. To use a site such as Protrade.com you have to have good math skills, statistic skills, logical reasoning skills and also makes you think analytically about things such as trades. It also increases the users knowledge of sports. Sites such as Protrade.com are also good because it is a good alternative to illegal gambling. These sites are fun and interactive. I feel that more sites such as Protrade.com would lure kids from illegal behavior to a legal, harmless behavior that they can also find entertaining.

“Nike first in line to pursue Bush” Vol 8 Iss 39 Pg 4

Nike has been talking to USC’s Reggie Bush about a possible major endorsement deal. Bush has yet to sign with Nike and may still have meetings with Reebok, Adidas, and performance apparel maker Under Armour. NFL players’ shoe deals are usually around $600,000 a year, whereas NBA players’ deals are usually higher. Before entering the 2003 NBA draft, LeBron James received a seven-year, $90 million deal with Nike. It is predicted that Bush will be the first to break the $1 million a year mark.

I was actually surprised that NBA players’ deals are more than NFL players, although I am not surprised though that Bush might be the first player to break the $1 million a year mark. The article mentioned that the only thing that comes close to comparing to this is Peyton Manning in 1998. However, prices for autographed items for Bush are three to five times what Manning got in 1998. It is also believed that Bush will sell at least twice the amount that Manning did. So as much as I think it is ridiculous how much some players receive or how they pass things up because it isn’t enough money, I can understand why businesses such as Nike are trying to make a deal with Reggie Bush and why the price they are willing to pay for players keeps rising.

"WNBA looks positives as 10th anniversary season ends"
The WNBA ended its 10th anniversary season with dropping season attendance, flat TV ratings yet with all those obstacles WNBA is still experiencing lucrative sponsorship endorsements.
Since 2005 regular season attendance fell for 8.6%, which is the lowest average in the leagues history. For example; now days "Chicago Sky: averages only 3377 fans per game and Washington Mystics attendance fell for 22.3%. Overall the WNBA popularity has been increasing yet 5 of the league's 14 teams saw an increase in seasonal attendance. For example "All Star Break" experienced an 8% growth and the average playoff attendance went up for 17%. When it comes to TV ratings WNBA went down also. Both ESPN and ABC are reporting lower numbers of viewers. Overall WNBA is still very optimistic and is eager to new challenges and changes that have to be made in order to increase its overall ratings. One of the biggest mistakes of previous seasons was that the WNBA held its Finals during the NFL Season, when the ratings for NFL rise up and women's basketball takes a second place. This years main change will be that the Finals will be held before Septembers football season and hopefully that will produce higher viewers ratings. ESPN together with WNBA is working on promoting its league and its coverages. WNBA claims that they have done everything in their power to promote their sports but unfortunately women's basketball falls into the category of other sport, which also are struggling on TV .
On the bright side WNBA's sponsorship endorsements increased to 33 from last years 27. Which brings the leagues revenue to about $1 million per franchise. Overall the picture is not looking that bad, since an average WNBA team sponsorships grew by 10%/ from last year. I believe that WNBA is a sport that doesn't appeal to masses of people that is why it is important to make it as appealing as possible when promoting so that it can grow expand and hopefully bring itself many new fans.

Sports Business Journal - Vol 9, Issue 22
One-on-One with author Michael Lewis

His passion and inspiration for writing came from his love for sports and knowledge of business.
“Moneyball” is a book about the game of baseball, the value of the market and how that one has a direct effect on its people. He describes the interests for business and sports are both present, especially when looking at the big picture. Both go through many problems, obstacles and yet when properly managed are able to achieve victory and success. For example: some experiences and problems that he came across as a trader, he saw happening in the world of baseball as well
At first an author thinks that one has to choose between business or sports but when u look at the bigger picture one realizes that these two worlds correlate and complete each other, also have much more in common than one might think. “Moneyball” is a book that generalizes things that matter and looks at those in wider perspective.
“Moneyball” is also a story of a kid whose name is “Michael Oher” who went from the bottom of society to being the second highest paid baseball player on the filed. Being African American, many have seen him as being born with zero potential, but got adopted by wealthy white family in somewhat racist Memphis Tennessee. Michael used his talents for ball to raise and maximize his trueborn potential to the fullest.
“Moneyball” is about the world of baseball and it details its business. It attacks the problems, the corruptions and fraud that are also no strangers in the world of business. The book opened the eyes to many running teams offices and one value system got replaced by another, which to some might be upsetting and to others it gives one hope for better leagues that wouldn’t be able to exploit its athletes and markets in the world of scouting and trading of so many athletes.

Klitschko has promotion company in his corner

I decided  to review this article because I am a big fan of Klitschko brothers.  They represent the highest level of boxing and are world wide well known athletes.  It is nice to see them being recognized in the Sports Business Journal, because so far they both have been well promoted in Europe however they are still fairly new and somewhat unknown to general American sports fans.  The interview in the SB journal portrays Vladimir Klitschko ( IBF & IBO heavyweight champion).  He is not only one of the greatest athletes, but he also hold a Ph.D. in sports science.  In this interview he talks about his career and how he took that one in his own hands. Believing that in many years as pro athletes he learned enough about sports industry that he can apply his knowledge and wisdom to manage himself.  That is why him and his brother created a promotion company named "K2".  Both of Klitschko brothers are trying to succeed in American soil, because one can say that once an athletes can make it in America, one can make it anywhere else.  Being new resident of USA he is still working to better his English skills and to became an even better fighter in the ring.  He is already a Champion but his desire is to be and maintain to be the best fighter in the World his desire is also to become the one who can get fans admiration and respect.
In Germany and the rest of Europe Vladimir Klitschko is very popular athlete that is endorsed by many well known companies, such as: Mercedes Benz, and is in many commercial portrayed as peoples person with big humor and kind heart that got him ahead of others, when it comes to loyal fans.  He sure got the European fans cheering for him everywhere he goes, and hopefully now he will earn admiration from Americans as well.

NFL Network wants Super Bowl series to be signature show
The article talks about the American Game "The Super Bowl Championships".
The NFL has invested a lot of money to produce a project "Super Bowl". NFL network gave the initial birth to the Super Bowl. IBM is also a presenting sponsor of the show and has several connection to NFL Network and NFL.com. For the 40th Super Bowl, one will be able to see the game as well as other promotional features on NFL website / NFL.com. With all the advance technology, fans will be able to enjoy the game on DVD, iPod, or video-on-demand component. All NFL film footage is shown by NFL Film's whose president is Steve Sabol. To make NFL the most interesting and up to date he and his staff have to run around and chase after players sometimes even travel great distances to get those player interviews for all the fans. The project like that is big and it has to be successfully organized and mane aged. To make an amazing series that every fan will remember one needs have an army of hard working people who will bring its fans exactly what they want. Show is a true representation of coaches and players telling the story from their point of view. The NFL Network hopes that its shows become signature programming, such as SportsCentury on ESPN Classics. I believe that what NFL network has done in the past and where their vision is to be is an example of a successful enterprise. This is a great example of successful management and expansion of a Sports corporation.

One-on-One Jimmy Johnson

Jimmy Johnson, a former coach for Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys (winning back to back Super Bowl). Also very successful college football coach, started his stardom at Oklahoma State, continuing his success at University of Miami (leading Miami Hurricane's to National Championships)
I found the interview very fascinating, because it portrays a person who is successful in many different ares of sports industry. Transitioning from a college coach to an NFL coach and now becoming a Sports TV Broadcaster presenting college football analysis to sports fans across the nation.
Even that I am not that familiar with Jimmy Johnson's career, one can't help but admire him for his love for sports. Everything he did so far turned into gold, because he is a hard working man with great enthusiasm for football. The part that was great to see is that he is just as enthusiastic about college sports as he is for professional sports, he loves sports for sports and that is how it should be. :)

Vol. 9/23 contd.
I just want to add that reading "Jimmy Johnson" interview gives one a nice perspective of all the different possibilities and paths that one can pursue in our field of study "sports business". Now we are all here studying Sports Business, and hopefully one day we will all have a job in the world of sports, making a difference and building success for ourselves and others. But either way, no matter what path we choose to take, its good to know that we got many options to choose from and just cause one once achieves a goal of being a great coach that does not mean one can't excel in other ares of sports industry as well. On that note, I wish us all GOOD LUCK! :)
